Adopted a 6 week old puppy, any advice?
I've had puppies before but never this young. I know they need to stay with their mother longer but he was found in a barn with other siblings so I adopted him. I just got him today and will be taking him to the vet within a few days, or as soon as they can get me in.

1. I have a crate, should I start crate training him now? How long should I leave him in a crate? I am home all day but want him to get used to it when I need to leave the house etc.

2. When should I start getting him used to a leash? He doesn't really go anywhere right now.

3. How often should I let him out to potty?

Thanks for your help in advance :)
answer:
1. Yes, you should start crate training him. Crates are especially good for puppies because it is good for house training the puppy, allowing the puppy to feel protected, teaching your puppy respect for your property, & preventing separation anxiety when the puppy is separated from its family. 2. Leashes are a pretty crucial, so I say "the younger, the better" when it comes to training them. It cannot hurt to at least get them used to it. Leashes ensure the puppy's safety when you are going for walks, to the vets, or simply out & about. You do not want your puppy dragging you all over the place. 3. When you are beginning to house-break a puppy, you should take him out every hour or two. If the puppy does not have to go potty, bring him back inside & try again in ten minutes. When your pup does go potty outside, praise him happily so that he associates going potty outside with good things. Always take a puppy out to potty after they wake up & after they drink excess amounts of water. Learn about potty training here: http://www.dogs-101.biz/potty-training-a…
imho, too young for a leash an too young for a crate! needs warmth, like a blanket and WHAT ARE YOU FEEDING HIM? The proper food is so important at this young age. Do not wait...try to get him to the vet now!

Potty breaks at least every 2-4 hrs now! (expect accidents!)

Forget about Neutering until your vet says he is ready! he is so young that these questions are way too early in his young life!
Good luck and I hope he turns out ok!
You didn't ADOPT the dog (definition of adopt: to take into one's family thru legal means), you found the dog. Anytime you get a new dog/pup, they need to be seen by a vet within 24 hours after taking them home. I have to wonder how you know that the pup if 6 weeks old if you found it?
aww puppies are cute:)
How do you know how old the pup is, if you found him in a barn with its littermates?

Why is there is no mention of the Dam? The Dam would not just leave her litter

Just read through your previous questions ... You ask a lot of questions on puppies ....

Are you hoarding? Sounds like it

Yesterday you said you were getting a Doberman this weekend

The questions on dogs and pups go on and on ..............

If your not working and are on Medicaid and Food Stamps you can't afford to have a pup / dog

You are either a hoarder or a troll
Try to get the litter together to spend time during the day. That is a vital part of socialization.

Don't worry about pottying outside yet. At this stage, try to get him used to a pee pad and holder. The outside world is full of things that could hurt him.

I wouldn't socialize him outside the back yard till four months. Even then you're taking a risk of catching some disease. At 8 weeks you can start putting a collar on his neck and letting a light lead trail behind him.

Early neutering is at 4 months I think, although I would wait till he goes through puberty, myself.
don't put him in a crate yet, wait until he's between 10-12 weeks.

as he's so young, try and keep him as near to you as possible all the time, he needs a motherly connection, and feeling your body heat and warmth and your breathing against his body will remind him of his mother and help your bond with him, meaning it'll be easier to train him!
