Why do people treat dogs as if they were expendable?
I've noticed a trend in why dogs are being rehomed.
"We're Moving,
We're going on vacation,
or we decided we aren't giving him all the attention he deserves".

I don't understand how people seem to think that these are valid reasons to get rid of an animal. Each one is an excuse, not a reason. You can either look harder for a place that accepts animals, get a friend or kennel to board your dog, or realize that dogs don't need constant attention to be happy.

So, why do people seem to think that it's alright for them to dump their dogs for no reason?

Oh, my favorite reason - an Akita had a "digging" problem. He died four months after being left at a no-kill shelter of a BROKEN HEART.
if they are expendable they barge so much so people treat
Things have always been this way. People have treated dogs like this since I can remember. I would never move somewhere that I couldn't take my animals. People are just filled with excuses. There are very few valid reasons for actually getting rid of your dog. I wish I knew the answer to your question. Why somebody would get rid of a dog because it digs is beyond me. I doubt the dog died of a broken heart, but that is besides the point.
We're moving - Depends on where one needs to move to. If a move is onto a military base, some bases do not allow dogs larger than a certain size.

We're going on vacation - Yeah, that's a pretty gorram stupid reason.

We aren't giving him all the attention that he deserves - 50/50 on this one. If the owners aren't able to give the attention then they shouldn't give to a shelter, but to a friend or someone who will take care of the animal. Emotional Neglect is often as bad a neglecting the animal's needs

And have you looked for a place to live recently? Unless you have the ability to buy your home, and not many can these days unless you have the credit rating of God, you will have a hard time finding a place that will allow animals.

This is the reason that I have no plans on getting an animal until I can move to where I can either buy a house or at least know that I'm not moving from there for a while. This means that I don't have any animals (other than my fish) for the next 5 years.

Digging? - Stupid lazy people need to TRAIN their dogs.
Thats where the term "treated like a dog" comes from
Society gets stupider all the time and over recent years there's less of a feeling like folks need to be responsible for their actions...like things that go wrong are someone else's fault and not that of the main person involved. Just my observation though. Lack of education about how to be a proper owner of a dog is a big part of it too. Sad, but it's the world we live in. I hear a lot of the same lame excuses. When you get a dog it is supposed to be a commitment for the life of the animal.
I agree! I think it's horrible - I not only miss my dog but I'd feel so guilty - I'd always be thinking about her and wondering where she is and if she misses me and if she understands whats happend to her. ;( pets question and answers,www.5d2d.com

But for some people I guess their circumstances change and they have to...but still I would feel awful if I did! As they say, a dog is for life, not just for christmas! So if you dont think you'll be able to keep it forever dont get one!
I agree completely. I have a puggle, and he's like my son. It says a lot about the depth of a person. It's like parents that decide they don't want to be parents. It's not fair to their kids.
