My 3 pound chihuahua getting fixed.....yay or nay?
I have the mist precious girl chihuahua named Emma. She's 6 months old and I'm definitely planning on having her fixed bur I've heard so many different opinions on when the right time is. I've heard to get it done asap. I've heard to wait until she goes through her first heat cycle. And I've heard she should have 1 litter first. I'm not opposed to her having a litter I have a neighbor with a two pound male whose asked me about berating them and I already have friends and family that I trust that have already said they would be interested in her puppies. With all the being said I really just want to do what's best for my little girl....so when would be the best time to have her fixed and in your opinion why?
answer:
I applaud you for wanting to educate yourself as best as you can before making your decision. Your dog is a pet. Yes, nature has given her reproductive organs same as all female mammals. However, pets are domesticated animals whose well being in every way has been entrusted to us. The overall healthiest decision you can make for your dog is to have her spayed. 6 months is the perfect time as a small dog usually goes into their first heat right at this age. Spaying her prior to her first heat will remove any chance for mammary cancer. It is an old wives tale that a female calms down or becomes a better pet after a litter or their first heat. Are there cons to spaying? Yes. 1. it is a surgery and there is always a risk with any surgery. 2. while many older female dogs intact or spayed may develop spay incontinence as they age, there is a slightly higher risk of it in spayed dogs at an earlier age. The pros for spaying without first mating far outweigh any negatives. The biggest gift you are giving her is the right to be a beloved pet without ever undergoing any risk of complications during whelping that could threaten her life or the piuppies (esp. as she is so small). Just adore your Emma... Good luck.
You need to get her fixed. 3 pounds is too small for her to carry puppies and 6 months is way too young for her to ever breed, it would most certainly kill her. Chihuahua's that small run the risk of not whelping properly, puppies getting stuck and ripping her up from the inside out.

If your friends and family want chihuahua puppies they can go a shelter or find a reputable breeder. Please do not put your female in danger.
There is NO health reason to let a dog have a litter before being spayed. It is an old-wives-tale that it "calms them down". Any "calming" that occurs is the result of the spaying, NOT the litter. If she's 6 months old, she is old enough to be safely spayed now, and it should be done.
Get her fixed at six months, because you can do it safely.
She does not need to have a litter - and in fact, that could kill her.
She does not need a heat, either. Just go ahead and schedule it with your vet.
She'll befine - the world doesn't need more chi's - there are millions out there with no home.
at 6 months she's pretty much fully grown at this point for a small breed so getting her fixed now is fine. By no means should you breed her even to a 2lb male. A 3lb ***** should NEVER be bred and just because he's 2lbs doesn't mean the two of them can't produce large pups.
its best to do it asap the first heat cycle raises ur dogs chance of cancer in the future and a litter of puppys can cuase many complications and even death if ur not an experience breeder especially for such a small dog.
Absolutely do NOT let her have a litter. Doing so would risk her life, and there are far too many unwanted chihuahuas in the world -- don't add to it.
The best person to ask is your veterinarian. They can give you specifics. You can call them.
At around 6-8 months would be ideal. And no you should not let her have a litter as chihuahuas can have plenty of complications during birth and that would not be doing what's best for your puppy.
Just wait until she is fully mature. Around a year old.

It's okay if she goes through 1 heat cycle, just keep her away from male dogs at that time. She doesn't need to have a litter before you spay her.

You will hear all kinds of different opinions, but from experience & my own opinion, it's better to wait until she is fully mature.

Some seem to think the sooner the better.....that is dangerous advice.
