After treatment for heartworms a dog MUST be kept on HW preventative. Is this true?
Please read first:
First I want to say my dogs are on HW preventative. I was talking with someone atwhos dog has had HW's in the past and treated, was considering not continuing the preventative. I thought I heard before that once a dog has HW's the dog has to ALWAYS be on HW preventative for life to keep the worms from returning. (I know ALL dogs should ideally be on it.) So did I hear wrong before that if a dog has had hw before that in order for the worms to not reinfect, which would happen with almost certainty if they didn't , that they would keep dog on preventative for life. Please answer I want to show this to somone.
Yes it's true
No not dormant. Yes life long preventative HW pills

Yes, they need to be kept on preventive, just like dogs that have never had heartworms. Otherwise they'll end up re-infected. No, they do not remain in the body following successful treatment.

Add: Other than the fact that a dog who has had heartworms before may have sustained some damage to their heart in the process, no- it is not any more crucial to continue than with dogs who have never had heartworms. But it is very important that all dogs be on a preventive, as heartworms can kill, and the treatment for them is stressful for their bodies and can be dangerous.
Glad I never gave MY dog that junk.
