I have one Pom Mix, one Chihuahua mix and one Chihuahua. And now I want to try and make them dog foods at home instead of buying them.
I have to talk to the vet first but do anyone recommend a recipe book for homemade dog food?
And do you make your own dog food?
Thank you so much:)
I cannot recommend feeding any of the commercial varieties of meat-flavored baked paste with chemicals added, but I don't "make" meals for her, either. The dog's natural diet is raw meat on the bone. Try it. The dog will love it, the diet will help him teethe properly as a pup, satisfy his lifelong need to chew, keep his teeth clean and his feces innocuous.

The basic idea is to approximate a wild diet as closely as possible; raw meat on the bone and small amounts of organ meat [liver is most important, but also kidneys, pancreas, spleen, lungs and what is called green tripe]. Amount to feed is calculated as 2-3% of the dog's ideal adult body weight. Your veterinarian can help you estimate that; then you just do the math. You don't have to be exact; all amounts are to be averaged over a week or two. Dogs [not toys or puppies] that get big, complicated meals sometimes will eat for two days and then not again for five. All perfectly normal.
pets question and answers,www.5d2d.com Most raw feeders that I've read have started their dogs on chicken: it is readily available and inexpensive, plus it is antibiotic-and hormone-free. The fat content is easy to control by how much of the skin you remove.
No grain, vegetable or fruit is a significant part of a grey wolf's diet. Dogs are genetically grey wolves.
Besides being unnatural, lately it is becoming more and more clear that they simply are not safe:

I used to make my black lab dog food and he LOVED it!!! Here it is:
3-4 chicken breasts
1 can green beans (reduced sodium)
1 can spinach (reduced sodium)
1 can mixed veggies (reduced sodium)
1.5 Tbs garlic powder
Cut chicken into cubes (can also shred, for smaller breeds) and cook in slightly oiled pan. In a pot combine veggies and heat on medium burner. Add the garlic powder. Stir and add in chicken.

The garlic powder not only gives this dog food flavor but is a natural flea repellant (of course you should still use Revolution or something of the kind)!! You might think that 3-4 chicken breasts is alot, but i found it easier to make alot on Sunday night and then refrigerate the rest for the rest of the week. My dog, Oakley loved this food and would think that i was making him food anytime i used garlic in anything. I hope your babies enjoy:)
Basic kibble recipe. I keep 8 cups in a sealed container in the refrigerator and freeze the rest in vacuum-sealed food storage bags. The kibble will keep in an airtight container for two weeks in the refrigerator, or three months in the freezer.
4 cups whole-wheat flour
2 cups rye flour
2 cups nonfat milk powder
2 teaspoons bone meal
1 cup plain wheat germ
1/2 cup chopped fresh parsley, or 2 1/2 tablespoons parsley flakes
1 teaspoon kosher salt
4 eggs
1 cup safflower, olive or corn oil
pets question and answers,www.5d2d.com 4 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
3 cups water
4 cups cooked ground beef, pork, lamb, duck, chicken or turkey
2 cups cooked and puréed sweet potatoes
1 1/2 cups chopped dried apples
2 cups frozen chopped spinach, thawed and drained
1. Preheat the oven to 300 degrees. Spray two large cookie sheets with nonstick cooking spray.
2. In a large mixing bowl, combine the flours, milk powder, bone meal, wheat germ, parsley and salt.
3. In a smaller bowl, beat the eggs and blend them with the oil. Add the Worcestershire sauce.
4. Add the water to the flour mixture and mix well.
5. Fold in the egg mixture and combine it all evenly.
