I took my dog to the vet last week because I noticed how red and smelly his ears where when he was shaking - turned out he had a bad yeast infection. The vet suggested along with the medication I received to change his dog food from lamb & ; rice to a potato & fish to help in the long run.
He usually eats California Natural Lamb & Rice dry food (because he's allergic to chicken), and we've been trying out California Natural Sweet Potato & Herring, but he stomach doesn't seem to agree w/it, so I ' d like to try some other potato and fish food, any suggestions?
My vet really liked that he was eating California Natural because it's single source protein and single source carbohydrates, so whatever I try out has to be the same quality. And please only dry food suggestions.
thanks!
Natural Balance makes this. I also had to changed one of my dog's diets to the Potato and Duck formula of Natural Balance when she wasn't doing well on Merrick. I know that Merrick is a much better food than Natural Balance, but you have to use what works for each individual dog. In our case, I believe it was the grains that didn't agree with her.

Flint River Ranch makes a very nice human grade Trout and Potato. I have fed it to my chi, who has some food allergies. My mother has a dog that seems to have food issues and he does well on it, as well. They also have a duck and oatmeal recipe:

Natural Balance Duck and Potato gave one of my dogs severe diarrhea. I have heard that is a problem with some dogs and that particular food.
Fromm is not available in my area.
Does the food have to be a limited ingredient diet with a single protein/carb? I really don't like most of them, because they often do not contain concentrated meat meals to back up fresh meats, which will lose water content and drop down the ingredient list during processing.
pets question and answers,www.5d2d.com If not, Orijen 6 Fish, and Acana Pacifica (if you want something less meatier than Orijen) are very good. The inclusion of botanicals is really a gamble with allergy prone dogs, but these foods are some of the highest quality products out there ( check out the ingredients, companies, etc.), with Orijen probably at the top spot. There is also Evo Herring & Salmon (meatier/higher in protein like Orijen), made by Natura, which also makes California Natural. All three are grain-free.
A Prey Model raw diet, if you have the time, storage, and a place to get cheap meat, is also a very good option. The diets consist of 80% meat, 10% organ, and 10% bone (you can alter to fit your dogs own needs), and you feed 2-3% of your dogs ideal adult body weight. That way, you can eliminate all carbs from your diet, which are necessary as binding agents in commercial dog food.
EDIT: I second Fromm! I've fed Surf & Turf, and some of their canned food before, but I didn't know if they had a grain-free, fish only kibble. Not a fan of the Beef Frittata, though .
I like Fromm - they have duck and potatoe, white fish and potato, pork and applesauce ....

I have recently got my dogs on their grain free Beef fritata - they also have surf and turf.
I feel they are in the top 2% of dog food manufacturers - check their ingredient profile and compare -
http://www.frommfamily.com/ ADD: Their white fish and potato is not grain free (it contains barley) - but their beef and surf and turf is. I have recently switched to the beef and find my dogs are doing very well on it. They also have salmon and a duck and potato. Two of my dogs have food allergies and I wanted to try the grain free varities.
I confess I was skeptical on beef - but honestly, after 2 weeks, my dogs are doing very well and I'm convinced. I will try the surf and turf next time. (I always switch protein sources to avoid food intolerances)
I have 2 dogs, a full bred female pug and a male pug mix. After the food recalls of 2007, I did hours of online research about dog food. The best dog food I have found is called Fromm. I rotate and feed both dogs the Fromm Four Star Nutritionals and also Fromm Gold Nutritionals. If your dog is overweight my Vet recommended that I feed the senior/less active brand. This would be Fromm Gold Nutritionals for Seniors. Fromm White Fish Four Star is the best fish based food you can get.
