My black lab has terrible dandruff?

My (slightly overweight) black lab has really bad dandruff. Instead of just white balls, it's more these huge flakes on his lower back. You take them off, then overnight they reappear. It's very gross. Does anyone know how to solve this problem or what the cause of this dandruff is?
It could be mites, in which case, he needs vet help. If he has or had fleas, it could be because he's been doing a lot of scratching.

Or it could be just dead skin cells just like dandruff in people. Make sure he drinks plenty of water, if the air is very dry, use a humidifier, brush him often, and add fish oil to his diet. Fish oil helps with dry skin and coat, as well as being good for joints.
You should get her a supplement that has fish oil. You can get her salmon treats, or just get the oil itself and mix it in with her food.

You should give her a bath, or take her to a groomer, and have her given an oatmeal bath. This will soothe her skin and give moisture.

If you do it yourself, you can also get an oatmeal conditioner. Make sure you rinse the shampoo off completely, because this will irritater her skin. And then leave the conditioner on for 5 minutes. Rinse her off, but you don't have to get it all off. Just like when you do your hair, leaving some conditioner in will help soften it.
I have a black dog who gets dandruff. Brushing a couple of times a week and washing the dog once a month or so should get rid of them. Use a good quality dog shampoo and do some extra scrubbing on his lower back, digging your fingers down to the skin to loosen the dead skin.
do not use head and shoulders. although it is good for human hair, the chemicals in it are bad for dog hair. my dog (rotweiller (sp?)/black lab) has the same problem (it is common in labs). go to your vet. they will give you a medicated shampoo . it is a little expensive, but its worth it for your four-legged friend:)

Go to dogfoodanalysis.com and select a 5 or 6 star food.

Add Grizzly Salmon oil to the food

Bathe with a conditioning shampoo

Brush your dog daily to remove the dry skin and spread the oil that is there.

If no results in 3 months have thyroid tested at the vet.
Take him to the vet to find the underlying cause of the problem. It could be dandruff like humans, or an allergy to his food or something in the household.
It may not be dandruff. It may be canine ezema (Pardon the spelling) and need specific shampoo/med from the vet.
Give your lab a higher quality food, add an egg a day and/or a tbsp or two of olive oil.
take him too the vet, they'll probably give you a special shampoo or something like that.
