My family is going bike riding today and I was hoping to bring my dog along to get some much needed exercise. She knows how to run alongside a bike and how to turn right and left, I have done it plenty of times before. The longest she has every run with a bike is about 2.5 miles, and afterward she was tired but not exhausted. She didn't slow down during the run.
She is a 60lb Lab-Vizsla mix. (And if you have/know a Vizsla they LOOVE to run!) She is about 2 years old.
Any ideas?
http://redbirddog.blogspot .com/2009/12/r ... A Vizsla mix should have no problem running along a bike for miles. They were bred to run all day with horses on the plains of Hungary.
Watch your dog. It will "tell you" when it has had enough.
The picture on my blog shows a harness set up and the "Springer" that keeps your dog's close by and leaves your hands free.
pets question and answers,www.5d2d.com Of course off-leash runs are better if you can find places to do it.
Quite a few posts on conditioning for field trials using a mountain bike on my blog.
Enjoy.

Please be careful. Running as a pack can override self preservation. Dogs will run until their pads bleed or they collapse if the lead dog doesn't stop or slow down. Distance running for dogs is just like people (but remember , no shoes). They need to develop stamina. My dogs are all treadmill trained and over time, 3 to 5 miles is where I keep them. Also remember if you get out there 4 miles and your dog begins to sway (a symptom of over temp, remember dogs don't sweat) you've got 4 miles to get back home. I don't recommend seeing how far you can go unless it's around the block in a circle.
I don't know. We used to take my pet pug up and down Multnomah Falls (rare hyper pug) and he would often run with my dad who is a serious runner and I think we've taken him biking so your dig should be able to run with you guys depending how far and fast you are going. Do stop if he seems tired.
i am not sure exactly how far they can run in gerneral, it all depends on the dogs althletic ability and its fitness, we used to have a yellow lab that my dad would go running with and they would run 3 k but running is different then biking, as long as you are sure you are not exceeding your dogs athletic ability or going to fast you should be fine.
pets question and answers,www.5d2d.com hope i helped
my dog can run completely around our park beside my bike which is about 6 miles, 10 km ... i let her set the pace and she just goes ... when she is tired she veers onto the grass and lays flat out: O) she is a jack russell terrier, 14 pounds ...
I have no idea. But, be sure to give your dog plenty of water every couple miles so they don't get dehydrated.
3 MILES. my dogs a jack russel and we dont go far on the bikes .. just short rides .. like up and down a road.
if your dog KEEPS stopping then i guess its tierd .. so make sure it walks instead of runs
my dog pulled me on top of the bike for 2.5 miles. he will let you know when he is tired.
