Is there any point in registering your dog with the AKC and you don't plan on breeding him/her? I am not breeding my dogs. One of them I adopted was already registered with the AKC, the other is not. Is there any point in registering him or is it just a waste of money?
Since it's relatively cheap to register them, do so. It's just one more proof of ownership just in case you may need it somewhere down the line.
Registration is pretty dirt cheap, it is not like you are giving them an arm and a leg. I would register the dog anyways for two reasons. One it is another piece of paper that proves the dog is yours and yours alone. And two it proves your dog is the breed it is if questions should arise about that. Very helpful for bully breed owners in my opinion, and also for breeds that look like bully breeds as well. A Labrador's life was saved because of his registration papers.
I registered my Sheltie with the AKC.
I mainly did it because it was fairly inexpensive (like $ 20) and it was just another slip of paper that said she did, in fact, belong to me. I also did it because then she would be registered as a Sheltie, and there would be no argument about what breed she was - probably would have never been an issue, but you never know.
If you're never going to show or breed your dog and don't plan on showing in dog sports like obedience , rally, agility, etc then there really isn't much of a point to registering your dog. If you don't plan to ever do anything with your dog beyond keeping him as a companion, then why give the AKC your money for privileges you'll never use?
It is just a money thing if you're not going to breed them, and good for you for just loving your dogs and not trying to make money off of them. Now that's true love.
Legal proof of ownership .... you own * that * particular purebred animal ... no one else.
