So my puppy (Maltese x Jack Russell) constantly barks at night and doesn't stop. We tried hitting his nose lightly, and ignoring him but nothing is working !!?!? And please dont tell me bring him in ur bed thats only rewarding him. My dads getting annoyed and wants to give him away HELP!! ASAP!! Btw hes about 16-17 weeks old.
Dogs repeat behaviors that work. The dog has learned that fussing in the kennel will eventually get attention . The only way to fix this is to ignore it. You may need to build some sound deadening barriers so your dad isn't so annoyed. Here is my recommendation.
1. Kennel train the dog. Work with a trainer or professional to make the kennel a very positive place. The kennel will represent a den which is a place of rest.
2. Make sure there are medium to low value toys in the kennel should the dog wake up bored
3. Exercise the dog. Dogs that are given proper physical and mental exercise sleep and rest in between events.
4. ONLY address the dog (letting in and out of the kennel) when they are in a quiet state. There are ways of getting the quite state where the dog doesn't know it is human acknowledgement.

Patience and consistency are the simple rules that correct this behavior. And oh yeah, never punish this behavior. Good Luck
I had the same problem with my puppy when I first got him. I tried to get him used to it in steps and it worked pretty well and quite quickly.
1. When I first got him I sat him in the cage with the door open and just kind of blocked him from getting out until he gave up and settled down. This way you can pet him and let him know that he's ok while he's trying to fall asleep.
2. When he does finally fall asleep I shut the door. This usually woke him up and of course he would start whining and barking again. When he does this just sit by the cage with him and stay very relaxed because the dog can sense when you are tense from the barking. He eventually calmed down and fell back asleep.
3. When he's getting used to the cage, he will not be able to sleep through the night. When he wakes up let him out to use the bathroom and repeat the process. This does make for some nights with little sleep but it does pay off in the end.
pets question and answers,www.5d2d.com It took my dog only about two weeks to completely sleep through the night. One thing that worked when I first got him was to sleep beside the cage. That way when he does wake up he will know that he's not alone and might even go back to sleep. Puppies are used to sleeping with their litter mates and get lonely when they are suddenly taken from them.
I hope this helps and know that the most important thing is to be patient because this does take some time.
Usually puppies that barks at night need to poo or pee outside their cages. (I don't know if you place him/her in a cage/enclosure at night) Sometimes they just miss their mothers so i would recommend you to either get a big stuff toy or a pillow to put in his place at night or check on him if he barks again. My puppy is placed in a cage every night and she when she barks I usually take her out for a while for her to pee or poo. Hope that helps have a nice day
Please don't hit his nose (or any other part of his body) even lightly!!
pets question and answers,www.5d2d.com You don't explain where your puppy sleeps, but he's probably feeling lonely. You probably give him lots of attention during the day and a puppy of this age cannot possibly understand why he is left alone at night.
Try leaving a radio on - he may gain comfort from this.

what on earth are you doing, hitting him on the nose, gently or not!? Are you insane!? How would you like it if i walked up and smacked you on the nose? Doesn't feel good, does it? now consider that the dog's nose is THE most sensitive and tender part of their anatomy - it'd be the equivalent of a double-shot to the 'nads for human male.
first off, are you walking that dog properly? i mean twice a day, no less than 45min because jack russells are one of the most high-energy breeds going. that means: if it rains, you walk him. if it snows, you walk him. if it's high winds, out you go. if it's flood, tornado, earthquake - probably better to run.
bringing him into your bed is NOT rewarding him - dogs are not humans. they do what works and clearly the barking is working because he's still doing it.
pets question and answers,www.5d2d.com dogs are, by nature, evolved to sleep piled up in a heap with the rest of the pack in a small, dark den. you leave the pup alone in the middle of a vast, empty room and yes, he'll bark his tiny little mind off.
what you need is crate-training - bring the crate into your bedroom and get him used to sleeping in it and staying in it when nobody's home. when ppl are home, he is to be let out - it's not a jail cell and he's not on 23hr lock-up.
read this page for the proper way to crate-train your pup and get some zzz's at night:
