Dog aggressive to other dogs 2 and a half year old lurcher from rescue centre please help thanks?
he is a wonderful dog with people and loves are 3year old boy to bits .in the house you cant fault him a perfect gentleman. get him out on the lead and he totaly changes soon as he spots a dog whitch he can do from a mile away he totaly loses it bigtime. he howls and jumps up spinning round and round on his back legs like hes dancing he wont walk on just keeps going crazy till the other dog has passed. very embarassing.we use a muzzle on him as he has bitten me and my wife during the spinning round not so much snapping but he will bite our thigh and hold on maybe for security? or trying to get off the lead as he bites that too .im not affraid of him grabbing me as i know its not in his real nature to bite people we have had him 3months and in the house have never heard him growl like i said he is totaly mellow and a real loving dog. we knew about his problem when we got him the people at the centre showed us what he did around dogs. we have introduced him to other family members dogs and 2 of them one a dog and one a ***** he totaly ignored and walked for miles with one day but then saw a dog in the distance and went crazy again! jumping up howling more than barking spinning round shaking and biting the lead totaly freaking out . being a sighthound he goes mad when he spots rabbits or deer too but thats to be expected . walking him in the oxfordshire countryside is a joy but on our estate its a total nightmare ! i am committed to helping my lurcher become more normal and relaxed any advise would be great thanks .the reason he was in the rescue centre was due to his problem as no one could be botherd to help him i certanly wont be taking him back this is his forever home . thanks for reading .
it could be a couple of things, he could be anxious when he sees dogs on walks which he doesn't know. especially with the jumping up. pets question and answers,www.5d2d.com
or he could be scared that this other dog may come near you and is trying to protect you.
do you know what makes him like this? he seems a little scared of other dogs he doesn't know. if one of these come near him does he still react the same way?
make sure your relaxed on walks, dogs cam pick up on human emotions, if you get nervous you dog may feel this.
i hope things work out for you and your dog, i hope this helps.
