What is a prong collar supposed to do?
They just look so menacing. What are they supposed to do?
they correct a mis behaving dog. They do various things while the dog is leashed.
A prong collar is usually just used for dog training. Like if a dog has a habit of trying to run away when on walks or something. It probably hurts a little bit but only if they pull against it, this is usually what owners try to teach their dogs NOT to do, which is why they'd use the prong collar
Heres alot of information on what there supposed to do,check it out:)

PS When used properly they are way safer then "choke chains".

I use them on my dogs
I was working at a pet store when the pinch/prong colors first hit the market. They are an obedience training color for dogs, and are far less harmful than a 'choke' collar.

We had to routinely explain this to customers, as they saw it looked 'wicked'. I had to put on on my bare arm, nearly every day, and yank on it to show that it did NOT hurt me, and hence would not hurt their animal.

The prong, or "pinch" collar is supposed to sit around a dog's neck adjusted so that a pull on the leash delivers more PSI (pounds per square inch) of pressure than a choke chain, all the way around the neck at the same time. The prongs dig into the skin without piercing it (if used correctly) and as the collar tightens the prong tips pull toward each other, pinching skin between them. A prong collar is known as an aversive, or pain-avoidance device; the dog is supposed to obey in order to avoid the pain.

People like them because they make dogs behave, fast (at least while the collar is on). Prong collars were supposed to be used only *temporarily*, with *difficult* dogs in training. Then it was discovered that choke chains could (and often do) cause permanent trachea and spinal cord damage to dogs, even when used as directed, and even when used by expert handlers. So.... some dog training classes began using prong collars *all* the time.

Just my 2 cents here but if my training instructor told me to use either a choke chain or a prong collar, I'd ask for my enrollment fee to be refunded.

I used to teach choke chain and prong collar dog training classes, and taught "dominance theory" (which was de-bunked in 1995 BTW), I am ashamed to say. I'm glad I know better now and no longer teach any of that junk.
prong collars are cruel and unnecessary.and no good trainer/ breeder in the uk would ever use one ( don't know about where you live) please before you try using this product on your pet try it on your self so you really understand what torture you are putting your dog through,as a canine psychologist i have encountered many cases of over anxious dogs as a result of this product and sadly of serious injury some of which were fatal . pets question and answers,www.5d2d.com
good humane training is based on reward and praise not discomfort and pain
perhaps you could try a head collar instead which are much safer and give better control
They are meant to simulate a mothers "bite" on the dogs neck, as if to give a correction, as a mom would to her pups.
