Puppy won't stop barking and whining?!?
I have asked a question before about the behaviour of my mum's puppy, but I have more questions.
We have a 10 week old West Highland Terrier and his behaviour seems to be getting worse rather than better. I am currently off on study leave since I've had an exam this week and I have another one tomorrow. The trouble is, our puppy has to be left in his crate upstairs whilst I study because he comes into the living room and destroys everything in sight! He is currently upstairs barking very loud and I can't concentrate.
I don't leave him in the crate all day. He gets out to run around when I am taking a break from studying. I have really had enough of him. He is my mum's dog, but she is at work from 7-4, and since I am off on study leave, she expects me to look after him. My mum and dad also work full time.

I am worried that I am going to fail this exam tomorrow because my mum selfishly wanted the dog when she was not going to be in to look after him.
Is there anything I can do to calm him down? If I let him out the crate, I am never going to get any studying done. If he doesn't calm down, I think I'm going to have to move out. I tell my mum that if I'd wanted to look after a baby then I'd have had one!
Thank you for your help.
give him a bully stick or something that he can chew for a long time so he will be preoccupied. He can't chew and bark at the same time. You can also try taking him out for a a very long walk so he be tired out and take a nap. Good luck.
thats what puppies do.
i knooo its horriblee.
ive raised a lot of puppies my whole life (im 19. been taking care of pups since i was a little kid)
they r like babies. if u leave them alone in a box where they cant see people

they will eventually stop after a WHILE
but if u keep popping in there or yelling at the dog, he will keep going cuz he is seeing that
when he barks and whines, your coming in. and thats what he wants
u have to show him ur not giving in and he will give up and go to sleep
TRUST ME.
but another thing, which i wouldnt rlly reccoment but it might be a quick fix, if to get a Kong toy.
if u dont have one, then just get a large spoon (not a small one. u dont want him to choke)
and scoop some peanut butter into it and leave it in there with him and A BOWL OF WATER.
dont forget the water.
that should prolly keep him quiet
Bring his crate down with you! There's surely no need to shut him away all day (even if you do get him out and play with him occasionally). Chances are if you play with him for a bit, and then crate him in with you so you can concentrate on your studying, he'll be fine. Bringing a puppy into any family is a commitment, one that usually everybody in the house buys into. They are not toys, to be brought out when convenient I'm afraid.
Bring his crate down with you! hes properly scared of being alone! don't shout then he will see some 1 is there and bark more! maby hes hungry?
First of all she is doing this because she is lonely and sad and bored. She is a puppy and they need a lot of attention and companionship as well as a lot of playtime. My advice, move the crate to the room with you. She destroys things out of boredom so before you study try playing with her for a bit. They have a lot of energy but it is short lived at this age so play catch making her run down the hall or living room after a toy. After about 15 minutes or so she will settle down, wait about 5 minutes and do it again then feed and water her, take her for a brief walk outside to releive herself and to burn a little more energy maybe even run with her back to the house, Then make a little soft bed inside the crate and put her in it with a bit of water a treat and a toy and pet her for a few, Leave the door open and you should be able to do your schoolwork for about an hour. You may have to repeat it again till your finished but you will get your work done without making her sad resentful and bored which will make her more likely to continue tearing things upa nd whining. This leads to teaching good manners and makes everyone happy.

The pup is a 10 week old baby and is suffering from being left on his own. Your Mum is selfish getting a young animal and thinking she can just go off and leave it for such a long time. That's the reason its barking and whining. Dogs are social animals and in the wild would be part of a 'family' where it would get companionship, affection and care which all young dogs need. It also needs to interact with humans and be taught what is allowed and whats not when it is part of a human family group.
