How do I take my dog off prozac?
My dog (kelpie, now 3-4 years old) came from a bad owner that was training him to be a pig dog. When we first got him if he was approached by anyone he would literally wet himself, as time has gone on he has become much more comfortable but really he is only calm and relaxed when I am there which is an issue being a) 20 years old and b) living with 2 parents, one of which (my dad) my dog still stresses over just like he did when we first got him. The vet prescribed him prozac, he has been on the prozac for around 6 months but I notice he is tired, and has few good days just like he did before it anyway. I went to the vet and said that I want him off it asap, and they told me that no research has been done in how to take a dog off prozac. Can anyone help?
You need to consult your vet on how to do it so side effects are minimal.

I agree with Pom mom but I heard this lady that she took her dog off prozac but not right off but took the doze down every week then she stop giving it to him. pets question and answers,www.5d2d.com

But I'm not a vet.

Since a Kelpie is a working dog have you tried to awake his instinct..
They are herding dogs so if you could give him some work that he can focus on daily I think his issues will go away after time.
Just my experience with dog that had issues that I try to give them work and with time their issues has disappeared.

Have you tried to walk him with your father?
You can start walking around the neighbourhood and then let your whole family join your walk. Everybody be relax and calm then you give the leash to your father and just keep walking don't stop.
If he wet himself then let him go thru the emotion because your are not hurting him and he will know that. Has soon his he can deal with his fear then faster he will recover.
Try going to a different vet. Chances are they will vary in their opinion. There will be some withdrawal symptoms when you take him off it but with tender loving care and attention, he will pull thru. He trust you and feel comfortable with you this will make it easy for both of you.
Your not very clear in what you write, are you saying you haven't noticed the prozac helping at all?

I think you should consult a dog behaviourist kelpies are hyper dogs and need careful handling.

Can you cut his prozac in take as you would a human coming off prozac? Reduce the amount he takes over a number of weeks.
Keep your dog to safe place.
