Good dog treats, recommendations?
Our household OVERTREATS our dog. He is packing on weight, fast. Me and my bf do not treat him at all hardly, but the parents treat him at least 3-4 times a day each, with milk bones.
He is a 50lb Pit mix, but he currently is overweight at almost 60 lbs!!
What are small-sized treats that are low in fat we can get for him so he takes in less calories? The parents will NOT give him LESS treats, so we are trying to regulate it by forcing them to only give him small, low calorie treats.
Recommendations?
answer: Zukes Mini Naturals are great treats and are about the size of a pea.
You could also try giving carrots instead of treats. Most dogs love them.
Tell your parents that giving the dog all these treats is very bad for him. Ask your parents how they would feel after eating potato chips and pop is large amounts every day for a month. You wouldn't feel very good. They are risking the health of the dog, that is very selfish. pets question and answers,www.5d2d.com
The dog also needs exercise if you want it to lose weight. 1 hour a day of walking is the minimum this dog should be getting. Break it up into 2-3 walks a day. More would be better.
ADD: To know how much food you should be feeding your dog per day, read the back of the bag. Follow feeding guidelines, for this dog, I would eliminate the canned food from his diet and feed the lowest daily intake recommend for his weight.
Another vote for Zuke's Mini Naturals. They are 2 calories per treat and no scary ingredients:
http://www.zukes.com/woof/mini-naturals.…It does sound as though you are overfeeding him a little as well. If he's 60 pounds when he should be 50, that's 20% overweight. Try knocking the rations back 15-20% for a few weeks and see if that gets some weight off him.
In my experience, the feeding guidelines on most kibbles overestimate rations for all but rapidly growing puppies.

Vegetables are fantastic treats for dogs because they are so low calorie that it's almost impossible to over do it. Baby carrots, celery, squash, tomatoes, canned green beans, etc., are all good options. A little bit of fruit also wouldn't hurt and is a fun treat for dogs. Milk bones are very high calorie so it's easy to get a dog fat with just a few. So with veggies you can still treat them but without weight gain. I like to get my dogs big, huge carrots from the farmer's market and just hand them the whole thing. They love it!
my dog loves baby carrots as an occasional treat. also, from time to time, apples. she comes running once she hears the apple being cut on the cutting board ;) pets question and answers,www.5d2d.com
another healthy occasional treat that's safe for dogs are blueberries.
EDIT: it is not good to feed wet food on a regular basis. i know you think this is the only way he will eat, but trust me, a dog will not starve himself. stop buying the milkbones (they're bad for dogs anyway) so that nobody can give them to him. one cup dry in the morning one cup dry at night. try adding a little water to his food instead of the canned food.

THe only sensible solution is to STOP FEEDING TREATS. I don't give my Pit Bull treats on a regular basis, she is in perfect physical health and weight.
Try green beans, or carrots.
** WOAH you are WAY over feeding that dog! No wonder he's fat! My Pit Bull is about 50-60lbs, and gets two cups of dry a day (1c morning, 1c night) and MAYBE a spoonful of canned food, or yogurt, cinnamon, salmon oil, etc.
Some dogs love veggies. You can also feed raw or cooked meat. Those would be healthy treats. Cooked or raw eggs would also be good.
freeze dried liver treats are good treats but in all honesty, i don't think 6- 8 milkbones a day is making your dog so over weight. You may be feeding him too much or need to start him on a new food.
Milk Bones are unhealthy.

Feed less food at each meal.
Make treats at home.
Google healthy dog treats
Home made treats will be healthier than what you can buy.
No NO NO NO!!! Feed him some charcoal, and you'll never have to worry about his diet....EVER AGAIN!
