I think I am ready to take the plunge into acquiring a puppy from a reputable Basset Hound breeder in France. I however, have never purchased a puppy from overseas so I am a bit apprehensive about such things.
When or if you have purchased a dog from overseas is there any advice or anything that I should know? Obviously I have not fallen into a scam, I know many BH breeders who have purchased from this woman so I don't have to worry about that, but in terms of the puppy being on a long flight, how can I be assured that he will be okay?
He is being flown from France to Canada ... so VERY long. Do they stop in between to water the dogs, let them out? I had my current Basst shipped to me via Air Canada but it was within Canada so it wasn't that far. He arrived fine and happy, if not a bit eager to get out of his cage!
Thanks guys.
Have a great day!
Hah - so you are buying from Carla G. after all eh?
Don't worry. I've flown mine from the UK to Canada, and back (not much difference in terms of flight-time) many times, and in every case without any problems. Shipping via Air Canada, if you can find a flight from France that's appropriate, would be my advice because I found it better to use the airline of destination - they seem to clear through Customs faster. Find a direct flight - there's no need to be stopping over, and that's only another opportunity for the pup to escape, to my mind. Hopefully this pup will be at least 6 months - I have shipped one at 5, but I'd not want to fly a younger one.

If I'm right in where you are getting your puppy from, she's shipped to Canada before (and to the States) so she'll be well up on what's best to do to make sure they arrive in good order.
ps Sorry you didn't respond to my emails.

Aw, c'mon ....... is the puppy-huggers paranoia this contagious? You should know better.
Tens of thousands of live animals are shipped world-wide daily. It's NOT a BFD!
NO, of course they don't fing "stop ".... that would be called a CRASH!
NO !!!!!!!!!!!!! Crates are SEALED at acceptance ... so animal CAN'T be tampered with ... released! You'd WANT some utterly ignorant freight handling moron pwaying w/it? ??
It'll be FINE .... bring trash bag & wet washcloth, in case of "biological" debris. & A collar & lead & * little * bit of water-don't overload til it pukes.
* & * Do NOT waste money on a scam ... "agent", my azz!
No they don't stop, inside the crate there should be water for the pup. Most pups sleep the whole way, so no need to take them out. But really where is a flight from France to Canada going to stop unless you are farther inland Canada and they stop on the coast, but unless that is part of the itinerary that won't happen. You can track the flight once you know what airline and flight the pup will be on. Airlines take good care of animals, specially those flying alone, some airlines are worse than others that is true, but I am sure this reputable breeder who has probably exported numerous dogs knows which ones to avoid. (ie like the airline in the US that lost that show whippet coming back or going to Westminster KC)
pets question and answers,www.5d2d.com I wouldn't worry at all.
You will have to look into CanKC's registering policies if you plan on registering this pup with them. I am not sure if they are the same as the US's reciprocal agreements.
