My dog has been having very loose stool since I have gotten him. He is a lab x border collie. I have seen a vet - the ultrasound did not show anything abnormal. Fecal test was clear of giardia and other parasites. Bacterial infections are also unlikely based on the rest of the findings. Allergies seem to be the most likely problem. The dog was on Candie Lamb and Rice. I switched to Wellness Lamb and Barley. It made it worse over the past month.
What is a good, high quality, hypo allergenic food that you guys would suggest I try?
I'd switch to a prey model raw diet. No cooking, as it removes much needed nutrients; no veggies, as a balanced meat diet can provide all the nutrients a dog needs and dogs digestive systems are not made to process veggies any way.
I have known a lot of folks who had dogs suffering from allergies and switching to a natural raw diet really did the trick for their dog.
Ive heard of something similar before with a friends dog in finland. Their dog was allergic to most dog food, they finally found one with venison and potato which did the job. I suggest you keep trying different brands and eliminate ingredients as you go. Hope this was helpful good luck
I've known a few people that have had dogs that had allergy problems and they started feeding Taste of the Wild and the problems cleared up completely within a couple of weeks. You can try this kind it seems to work well for dogs with sensitive systems.
If it is an allergy all you did by changing him from one lamb based food to another is to change the bag his allergen is coming in. Try him on a grain-free non-lamb based diet, I recommend one of the fish and sweet potato diets.
Feeding raw or home cooked is the healthiest.

If you want to feed kibble it may be as simple as not feeding a lamb based food.
Make transitions from one food to another gradually.
Try a small bag of Canidae chicken and rice.
If that doesn't work:
Prepare chicken and rice to settle the stomach and digestive tract. Cook the rice until it is almost mushy. Replace a little less than 1/4th cup of the water used for cooking the rice with chicken broth for added flavor.
You can add a tablespoon of canned pumpkin, not pumpkin pie filling, to regulate the moisture in the stool.
Go to dogfoodanalysis.com and look at the 5 and 6 star foods.
Select a food with a protein source he has not had before such as fish or venison.
Grain free is best but transition very gradually as it takes some time for the digestive system to adjust to the higher protein level.
If the Candie you mention is Canidae, they have changed their original formula and many show breeders have stopped using this food due to loose stools. Wellness should be a good food, but considering you are using Lamb both times, that may be the problem. Find a formula with fish.
pets question and answers,www.5d2d.com Stay away from anything containing corn, wheat, soy, by-products, or lately even chicken. You must also be very careful of dog treats. Most of them carry the above ingredients and when you are trying to stop allergies, you need to be aware of everything that goes in that guys stomach.
If none of this is working for you, it could be environmental and you would need to see a specialist.
When working with a dog with allergies, it's very important that you understand all the nutritional needs so you don't inadvertently deprive him of an important nutrient.
Personally, I'd home-cook, as I did for one of my Westies when I couldn't find a kibble that agreed with him. In doing so, I got Monica Segals booklet (7.95) on Home-cooked diets and worked from there.
