I need opinions from people with dogs, would it be easy to k

Hey everyone. I've always wanted my own dog. It was my dream. My mother passed away when I was little, my dad comes home from work late, so through out the day if I am home, I'm alone .. all my friends told me a dog would be lovely for me. My social life is good, BUT I too feel I need a dog. I wanted to get a Maltese or a Pug but the problem is, a year ago I had tonsils and adenoids removed. Throat is all fine now, only nose is a problem as I sneeze if I don't take my daily tablet. My doc says I need to give up the tablet soon as I shouldn't take it forever, my best friend has the same problem and her doctor said the opposite, that if it's of good help she can take it through out her life. Now, the question is, would getting a maltese or a pug get in the way of my nose? I really didn ' t think so because my boyfriend has a pug and I'm always around that pug and I'm totally fine. It's been a year since my surgery, and I think I've waited long enough for my dog.: '(PLEASE give me advice.
I would highly recommend a maltese. i got one a few months ago because i suffer from adhd and she is my Emotional Support Animal. Gracie, my maltese is the sweetest thing on earth. i suffer from asthma, but unlike a pug she doesnt shed. obviously dander can get in her hair, but pugs can shed heavily, although they are small. i woud recommend getting a maltese and because a dog calms you, it litterally can be benifitial to your health!!! !!!! people with dogs are much less likely to get sick, and live longer. youll never regret your discision! pets question and answers,www.5d2d.com

good luck!
It's all up to your dad, discuss it with him. If you really do have a good social life like you say though then your dog will be all alone. You should never feel like you "need" an animal.
You are 19yrs old, IT is your choice. If you are feeding, caring and loving the dog I see no issues with you owning one .. IMO, I'd go with the pug but you have to take in consideration the snorting, and sometimes health risks the breed carries .. much like any breed.

I wish you luck
I say get a Maltese, they are reliable dogs, and so cute!! They have great personalities, and I'm pretty sure it won't interfere with your nose, btw I have had my Maltese for 6 years, and I love her to death!! Her name is lil Missy!:) good luck!!
I would go with what your Dr advises.

Its quite different to ocassionally be around a dog .. than to have one in your home, shedding and leaving hair and dander about.
Ive never owned a pug or a maltese but go with the pug their faces are wrinkle:) btw im so sorry about your mother: '(
You dd not provide the name of the tablet for sneezing. I assume it is a prescription anti-histamine. Watch how often other people sneeze. It is from pollen, dust, things in our environment. Most people don't take meds for it because that is adding chemicals to your body. Maybe not taking the prescription for a week and having your boyfriend's dog stay with you would be a good test of your sneezing. With a boyfriend, an active social life, college and a career in the future do you really have the time to devote to a dog?

A dog is a lifetime commitment.
It sounds like you should be physically okay with a dog but what do you know of dogs? And you need to ask your doctor about this, not a bunch of strangers online.

* IF * the doctor okays a dog: Get busy with the books and read up on all phases of pet dog care and training. Learn how to find a GOOD breeder. Hint: They don't sell puppies through newspaper ads nor online. Pets are a lot of commitment, work, expenses, and responsibility. Pets are quickly becoming a luxury item due to rising veterinary expenses. Are you willing to commit to brushing and combing a Maltese every day for the next 15 years? Do you know what undersized nostrils look like on a Pug? Can you identify luxating patellas? Maybe neither of these breeds is right for you; have you researched any other breeds at all? Are you ready for a week of night crying, and cleaning up pee and poop? Having your belongings chewed up? Trimming toenails? Brushing teeth? Shedding?

Lots of good dog books at Dogwise, www.dogwise.com, including some good ones on breed selection.

Once the novelty wears off, you still have all of the work, expenses, commitment, and responsibility.
A dog is always a great companion for people I think at least. Active and keep you on your toes.

I am not sure if the fur of a Pug or a Maltese would mess with your nose I am not real sure what you mean by that.

Research both the breeds. Do the pro's and con's between the two breeds. Which ever has more positive feed back for you choose that breed. Or get a mixture of the two a mutt. Just do your research and if possible find a pug or a Maltese Rescue or even a shelter around the area. Adopting is the best.
I don't know, it depends on you. If you have no problem with the pug, then Maltese's wouldn't cause a problem. But keep in mind that they do shed more (Pugs), do tend to have more health problem, and much more stubborn. But on the other hand, they are cuter (not saying that Maltese's are not cute) I have two Maltese's myself, and never have had a problem for 8 year (on ear infection once). So, keep in mind of those things and get your dog from a responsible breeder (for your case, i recommend breeder over shelter, cuz 'you don't know how the dogs are and if they can fit your requirements are not.
