I know a clicker trainer that's done something similar with her dog. My sheltie (marker training, she's deaf so can't hear the click we use a flash light) is getting close.
I think because marker training is very precise and tells the dog EXACTLY what behavior it is we liked it's easier to train a dog to do ... well that. At this point I can twitch my hand and have my dog go exactly where I want her to. It 'pretty ******* awesome and my ego loves it ha!

Well, the only genetics needed are probably the genetics for a dog to be obedient, intelligent, and willing to learn!

Skidboot was an amazing dog, he died in 2007. His owner still performs with some of skidboots puppies.
