So today I took my dog to get groomed, and my dog came back with an irritated red eye.
He can barely open it. While its closed it looks wet and has a little bit of white guey stuff on it.
It seems that he is not in a lot of pain but he does seem depressed.
Its only in one eye.
He might have a cut or it might be an irritation from shampoo.
Do we take him back to the groomer?
What do we do?
It may just be irritated, he may have a scratched cornea or he may have conjunctivitis. The groomer can not prescribe medication. I would go to your vet.
Take him to the vet. The groomer will, most likely, say "Oh it's nothing he just got shampoo in his eye" and refuse to give your money back. If you go to the vet first, the vet can actually diagnose him and will be proof of what happened if the groomer refuses to give you a refund. So if the groomer wouldn't refund your money, you could tell them to call the vet or bring them a paper from the vet.
pets question and answers,www.5d2d.com It's probably just irritation from the shampoo, but it could also be a scratch. So you need to take him to the vet as soon as possible. And you probably should start looking for another groomer.
Any time a dog won't open an eye it is much more serious than irritation from shampoo. It is probably very painful and should be seen by a vet ASAP. Since it is the weekend, that means a trip to the ER. You can settle with the groomer next week when you have a vet bill and a proper diagnosis. Waiting to see a vet could cause further unnecessary pain and damage to the eye.
Groomer first to point out the problem and let them know you'll be expecting reimbursement for the vet bill . Then to the vet on Monday for a check-up. The groomer won't be able to diagnose and you certainly don't want to trust them to anyway. They need to be 100% responsible for the vet bill, though. They did the damage, they need to make it right. And don't take your dog back there again.
Go back to the groomer and see what happened, it's the best thing to do, to see what happened
Go to the groomer in the morning and ask about it, I don't know why you didn't before you left. Then take him to a vet.
Take him back to the groomer, ask him/her about it, then take him to the vet.
take him to the vet
If I had a dollar for every person who ever brought me a dog for grooming that already had something wrong with it, which the owner apparently hadn't noticed, yet (?!?!) and then later asked me about, I would have retired a most wealthy woman years ago. I'm talking everything from * large * scabby bare spots to ear infections (which I noticed and told the owner about on the first visit) to broken toenails to scars to missing teeth to (obviously, at least to me) broken tail bones to one memorable dog that had a piece of something stuck in his facial hair that was scraping his eyeball! I felt so sorry for that poor dog and I trimmed the hair right away... then before I could say, "Please see your vet about this eye," the owner threatened to sue me for what really was HER abuse and neglect of the dog! I have been blamed for an old dog's cataracts, young dogs 'luxating patellas (hereditary) and several dogs' allergies (bad breeding again) even when I use hypo-allergenic shampoo.
pets question and answers,www.5d2d.com I'm not saying that your dog had a pre-existing condition because I didn't see your dog, and I don't know your groomer. I'm just saying please don't automatically assume that the groomer did it. Does your dog stick its head out the window when in the car? That's an easy way to get an eye injury from blowing debris. Does your dog bounce around in the back seat on trips? He or she could have bruised that eye. Is your dog an outside dog? All kinds of things can happen outdoors. Redness, soreness and irritation don't always happen immediately.
Assuming that yours is an indoor pet and he was safely in a crate during the trip to the groomer AND that you looked clearly and carefully at both eyes before dropping him off (and all was well), it is still possible that the groomer did nothing to the dog but the dog went a little (or a lot) wild in the tub, on the table or in a cage while waiting to go home and hurt himself. If I were to repeatedly bang my head on the wall at a restaurant, would the cook be liable for my injuries?

Regardless of what you believe, please have the courtesy to ASK the groomer if she or he noticed anything wrong with the dog's eye. Most groomers I have known were honest and perfectly willing to tell what happened, if they know.
DO take your dog to a vet if the condition still exists on Monday. Go sooner, of course, if you know of a vet who will see your dog tonight or Sunday. If you don't have a dog first aid book, call an emergency vet and ask how to care for your dog's eye. I suspect something is caught under the lid and will wash out by itself OR * maybe * you can help it along; ask a vet what to do and how.
