How do you train your dog not to run away?

Our dog can get through the wire fence and we can't change it because we are renting he has to be tied up on a rope all the time
First off! Mend the fence. When you see him trying to get thru the fence, simply tell him, "NO!" and tie him up. Repeat this every time he tries doing so. What you need to do is take your dog for walks and introduce him to the neighborhood he lives in. How would you feel if some one told you, you can't leave the house. You'd become pretty bored after awhile huh? It is no different with the dog. He is picking up on all these sounds and scents, he wants to be part of it. You surely can't fault him for that! He won't run away once he knows what going on outside his confined area. Taking him for a walk will satisfy his curiosity, in other words he knows what is going on beyond his area. A lot of dog owners aren't aware that chaining a dog to a specific area is torture for him. Your dog does not - have to be tied up on a rope all the time. If you love your dog and are a responsible dog owner, take him for walks, let him know what is going on around him. No wonder he wants to run away. I'd sure want to run away. A dog isn't something you just rope up and condemn him to an isolated area, he is part of your family. Would you tie your child up and not let it leave the house? Whether you know it or not, your dog is a social-able animal, it isn't some thing you stash in the back yard. If you're a responsible pet owner, then treat your dog as you would a family member, because that is what he is! If you can't give him the love and attention that he needs, then give him to some one that can. He is emotionally starved, no wonder he tries running away. Your dog gives you unconditional love, can you say you do the same for him? It is wrong what you're doing to your dog, he needs attention, love and interaction. Good grief people give him a break or give him away to some one that can truly care for him. No disrespect, but you really piss me off for the way you're treating your dog. He is an animal that gives you unconditional love, and you treat it this way! Are you telling me that you'd chain your child to the back yard? Like I said, if you're not able to give this animal love and interaction, give it to some one who will. pets question and answers,www.5d2d.com

Dogs want company. They are not good being alone. A lot of the running away is them burning off energy that they cannot burn off when confined outside with no mental stimulation.

You need to be exercising that dog morning and night 30 minutes each time .... on average, interacting with the dog other times during they day, teaching command, petting, brushing, etc.

A dog tied up outside with little human contact is nothing more than a eating and pooping yard ornament. The dog is miserable.
Spend time with it so it knows it's a loved member of my group.

Even dogs that aren't house dogs can be invited in on a leash to a "safe" area for 5 or 10 minutes at various times throughout the day.

I get off my butt after a TV show ends and spend 2 or 3 minutes giving the dog treats and petting outside.

I play.

When I'm on the phone, I sit out with the dog and throw something with my free hand.

Step out during commercials.

It only takes a scrap of the dogs normal food or broken piece of a Milk Bone treat or animal cracker to say hello and show the dog some love.

Frequent visits will get his attention more on the door and less on everything else.

A high energy dog would much rather run passed you trying to tap his butt than run through the neighborhood.

A good chance to practice recall by stopping the Tether Dog game to give a treat and pet before sending him off running again.

10 minutes of doing nothing else but giving the dog some fun.
You can't train a dog to not escape its yard. As the owner of the dog, it is your responsibility to make sure it CANNOT get out. As for your excuse, talk to your landlord about either fixing the fence or allowing you to fix it and possibily subject the cost from your rent.
Continue tying him, and he will never get out.

Dogs run. They want to explore. It's what they do.
Put up a electric fence.
Its like trying to teach a kid not to wander
