I give my dog his monthly dose of frontline, flea medicine, but he came in contact with a puppy that had alot of fleas. Can he still catch them? I gave him a bath today because I had noticed some itching (more than he normally itches) just want to make sure he doesn't have any! And if you suggest taking him to the vet, our vets here suck, they told me one dose of frontline can last a whole year.
Yes fleas can still get on your dog even if treated with Frontline (or any other flea product) however with the Frontline any fleas that get on your dog will die as will any eggs. The fleas do NOT have to bite the dog in order to die with Frontline .. . they only need to come in contact with the treated hair/skin. you need to make sure to reapply the Frontline every 30 days. Make sure to follow the directions given on the box/vile.
**** Sorry but people on YA should NEVER have their advice taken over your vet (except when it comes to foods). They do NOT know your dog, your dogs medical history nor do they have medical training or a medical degree. Taking advice in regards to medications, treatments & dosages and diagnosis of illness from people on YA can be very dangerous even fatal to your dog ******
Absolutely! Frontline works well, but it does NOT repel fleas. If fleas jump on your dog, they will be eventually killed by the Frontline. If you bathed the dog, you did wash some of the Frontline off. You can apply it every 2-3 weeks if needed and I would put another dose on him since he was around a heavily infested dog. I personally use Comfortis ... the monthly flea pill. It's safe and kills fleas within 30 minutes ... and you don't have to worry about washing anything off. Just give it with a full meal for proper absorption ... ask you vet about it.
Yes it could happen especially this year because everywhere the fleas have been pretty bad. All you can do is use the medicine and it should help a lot with the fleas but there could still be some left. We wash our dog constantly with flea shampoo and it seems to help out a lot. Good luck with the fleas (if there is a problem with them)!
My vet says frontline isnt doing the trick this year and has us giving the dogs and cats we have the flea pill, it cost just about the same as frontline possibly a little cheapier but not by much, you must get the pill from the vet for its a prescription, its much nice because its not a medicine you put on the animals skin which could cause irritation it is a chewable pill that they take and last a full month ... where I am from its almost winter so we wont have to do it durning the winter months but as soon as the snow is gone we will start back up ... good luck, the pill is called comfortis ... the flea pill for the cats is called something different though ...
its unlikely, but possible. both of my dogs were on the same medicine. one caught fleas, the other did not. since you gave your dog a bath, you should be okay, but it would be wise to brush them with a flea comb. after each stroke dip the brush in soapy water to kill what may be on it. rinse him after and continue to watch him closely. the sooner you catch it, the better.
yes, it is possible for him to get fleas.if the medicine repels them, he might get them and them you would HAVE to give him a bath.it is the same the other way around.so do not bring him near the dog again.
The medication does not prevent the fleas biting the dog. It only kills the fleas after they bite, and also prevent them from laying eggs on the dog.
The fleas can still get on him and bite - but they will be killed b the first bite and you won't get a separate stand alone infestation
