Bad press about this dog breed?

Why do people hate chihuahuas? Hahaha ..... I mean me people say they are yappy little rats but I do not agree. They are wonderful, well that's just my opinion what do you think?
Because most people want every dog to act like a Golden Retriever, and Chis dont.

They tend to bond more to one person and not be terribly social with strangers. They can be strong minded and possessive, and frequently need a firm hand (which many chihuahua owners dont provide, so they become little dictators.)

I have had two, and my old Chi was one of my all time favorite dogs, once we came to an understanding on who was in charge. I am fostering another one now who used to snap at strangers, but has learned to be more social , and who hopefully will find a home soon.

"Yappy" is just a lack of training.
Awesome ~!!

I agree with you to they are beautiful dogs. It is not that dogs fault that owners can not raise there dogs properly, it shouldnt be the breed blamed it should be the owner (same thing with pit bulls).

I have a chihuahua x named jack he is 1 year old and a beautiful dog. Now my mum wants a purebred chihuahua but we already have 4 dogs lol:)
I normally do not like them either since I've been bitten by a few. I don't like the yapping at all. I gotta say though that I am concious that it's always the owner's fault for not training them properly n treating them like babies instead. The only 2 Chis I've ever liked was one quiet n cute I saw at petland ... (unlike all the other dogs he was calm and quiet to my surprise when I walked in with my awesome quiet well-behaved boxer puppy) and the other one is the taco bell dog lol. But I bet if I hypothetically speaking was 2 have one n trained him properly I would love him as much as i love my boxer ... but that wouldn't happen since I prefer big dogs ... if I were to get a small dog it would be a bulldog, a small poodle, or a toy xolo, but i would never want a chihuahua. Just not my type of dog.
I love all dogs but I tend to love BIG dogs more pets question and answers,www.5d2d.com

I do think they are yappy but most small dogs are

but Chi's are more of a one or two person dog unlike other dogs they get attached to one or two people and then won't let anyone else in their "circle" and thats when the nipping and the yapping come in play but its also can be broken with training. So its mostly the owners who don't train their dog properly cuz they treat it like its a person and not a dog and I mean I treat my dogs like little babies and they are spoiled but I still know they are dogs and they to have limits just like children and most small dog owners not just Chi owners tend to treat them like an equal so then they tend to rule the roost if you get what I mean.
I used to have a chihuahua , Gustina! She has now passed after having her for about 4 years. We got her from a lady who had her for about a year and she worked for my grandpa. She said she was going on a cruise and needed someone to watch her and knowing me as an animal lover asked me to watch her, and she offered me $ 9 a day ... so I agreed! Well, long story short she basically left and moved and I didn't hear from her until 2 years later! No Kidding!!! She just abandoned her and then 2 years later she wanted her back! Yeah right! Anyway, Gustina was a very well behaved dog and loved people and other dogs. She wasn't yappy at all. I will always miss her !!! I never knew how old she was but after having her for about two years she seemed really old and when we got her, her teeth were really bad, and then her face turned gray. She just passed away while she was asleep. I guess from old age.: (And I agree with you! They are wonderful !!!!
The only chihuahuas I met that I ever liked was from Taco Bell ........=0)

Seriously nothing personally against them their just not MY type of dog .... not only are they yappy, they bite before you can blink even when your minding your own business .... I rescued one once from a dog pound in 4 days he cost me almost 500.00 ~ and after that I had to pay another organization to find him another home as the dog pound REFUSED to take him back ..........
some are good some are great some are bad and everybody knows that one person with the annoying yappy little rat dog even worse if its Miniature and that bad impression sticks but ive had the liberty to meet a wonderful really quiet nice chihuahua and that changed my opinion and im not the type to like small dogs
It all depends on how you train the chi's. My sister is a breeder, handler, and owner of chi's. All of her dogs are wonderful but they have alot of training. She works with them (or grooming as they are long coats) for hours of each day. Now. I've met a few that weren't all that nice. I'm a true believer that all breeds start out nice, it's their owners that make them have the bad rep.
