I am considering a Great Dane as my next breed of dog. Since they are big dogs, how much should I expect to spend on them per month (in terms of food, grooming, etc). Also are they fairly easy to train and good with other dogs? And what health problems are they prone to and are they still avoidable if you buy froma good breeder?
To start with lets dispell some myths in regards to Danes ... they are no more prone to hip dysplasia or other joint problems then most other breeds of dog, actaully they are less prone then Labs, Goldens, GSD among others. Their life span is an average of 10 years the same as that of Dobermans, Labs, Goldens and many other breeds. Many Danes live into their teens with out issue. A well bred well cared for Dane is at far lower risk of having an issue then a badly bred or badly cared for Dane. Danes don't eat as much as many people think if they are being fed a good quality food and not one of the grain laden cheap store brands. I feed Taste of the Wild and it costs me $ 95 - $ 100 per month to feed 2 Danes and 2 German Shorthaired Pointers.
pets question and answers,www.5d2d.com Danes are very smart and very easily trained. Training must begin the minute you get your Dane puppy. You need to make sure you buy your puppy from a responsible breeder who does health testing, breeds to breed standard and breeds for health, longevity & temperament.
I suggest you get the book Living With Danes by Jill Swedlow.
I know many people who have small/toy dogs & Danes. My own Danes get along very well with my son's Min Pin.

i have a great dane and spend around $ 200 a month on him. the biggest health problem they are prone to is having hip problems because of their size. they are really good dogs. they are easy to train and are usually good with other dogs. great danes are also known as gentle giants! mine is very gentle. he is always happy!!! if you can afford one, they are great dogs.
A full grown dane will eat 50 + pounds of food per month minimum. Danes average lifespan is barely 6-8 years. They have issues with stomach turning if they excersize too soon after eating also, which can kill them easily. Grooming isn't much of a hassle since they have relatively short hair.
get a book on great danes to read all the health problems possible
then you know what to ask breeder what they have tested for
would say they train as good as you can train.
should be it trained
about $ 300 a month if feeding a quality food
Vet insurance is a definite must with this breed they have so many problems, with larger breeds u are always goin to have joint and back problems.so consder this b4 and over all b4 u decide 2 get 1.its all good and well gettin it cause theay are cute and cuddly.
