Lepto shot for dogs help pls!?

My dog got her first Lepto shot and had no side effects. She is due to go back for the booster in a few days. I am wondering because she had no reaction to the first shot is it still possible for her to react to the booster ? or is it like you are either allergic to it or you aren't? My vet did not inform me of the side effects of this shot and I didn't know until after I had gotten her the shot so I am concerned that she could still have a reaction after the booster? is that possible or no because she had no reaction the first time? Thanks!
Yes it is always possible to have a reaction. Even year later int he form of allergies and kidney failure.

I personaly never vaccinate for this. So I would research if it is truely neccasary in your area.

Leptospirosis vaccine is a common cause of adverse reactions in dogs ranging from life threatening anaphylactic reactions to mild facial swelling and urticaria.

Leptospirosis is an infection of the kidneys and liver. Dogs and people get it from contact with urine from rats, raccoons, cows and pigs. The risk of contagion from dogs to humans is very low. pets question and answers,www.5d2d.com

Most of the clinical cases of leptospirosis reported in dogs in the US are caused by serovars (or types) L. grippotyphosa, L. pomona and L. bratislava. (1, 9, 15-p20, 21) The most commonly used vaccines contain different serovars-L. canicola & L.icterohaemmorrhagiae. Cross protection is not provided and protection is short-lived (6 - 7 months) (19) New Vaccines recently introduced by Fort Dodge include L. grippotyphosa., and L. pomona.

Although Leptospirosis in dogs seems to be increasing in Michigan, Wisconsin, Ohio, and New York, this disease is rare in Texas. Records at Texas Veterinary Medical Diagnostic Lab show an average of 12 cases of Leptospirosis in dogs in Texas per year. In 2000 the TVMDL recorded L. Icterohaemorrhagiae -3 cases, L. canicola -2, L. pomona -2, L grippotyphosa -1. Texas A & M University reports 31 cases in 21 years. Although this is a serious and life threatening disease, in a state with an estimated dog population of over 7 million, I do not think the risk justifies routine vaccination, with two vaccines twice per year.

This vaccine should not be given to puppies less than 16 weeks of age as it is very immunosuppressive. It can interfere with immunization against parvo & distemper. Reactions are common. Deaths due to immunosupression can occur.
A reaction can happen with ANY vaccine, not just lepto. Yes, there's a possibility it could have a reaction after the second vaccine (seeing as though your body must first be introduced to something before it can actually become allergic to it.) HOWEVER, that being said, vaccine reactions are very rare, and, if you are really that concerned about it, you have 3 options. 1. If lepto is not prevelent in your area, don't get the vaccine (although I highly suggest it because lepto is not a good disease to get, and it can be transmitted to humans.) 2. Ask your vet to pre-treat you pet with either an antihistamine or steroid injection before giving the vaccine. Or 3. Hang out at the hospital for at least 30 minutes after your pet recieves the vaccine because if your pet is going to have a reaction, it will happen within the first 30 minutes after receiving the shot.
vaccine reactions can occour up to 3 days after the vaccine is given.

vaccine reactions can occour at any time. We had a cat that had been regularly vaccinated yearly with no problems .. when she was about 7 years old she had a life-threating reaction to her yearly vaccines.

My crested has a reaction to the lepto vaccine. The vet specifically gets a vaccine that contains only parvo and distemper for him because of this.
There is not a vet in my area that would ever give a Lepto shot as they feel they are unnecessary.

It is definitely one of the vaccines most prone to causing a reaction.

I think its been at least over decade that my vets stopped giving it.
