I have a pug who is 8 years old. He always is laying down. I pick him up and he lays back down again. He's a little bit fat, which could make him lazy. He can't be tired because he sleeps all the time and he can't be depressed because I always scratch and pet him! Is there something wrong?
no hes lazy
Fat? Sleeps all the time? Sounds like not enough exercise. The dog often adapts to the energy level of the household. They want to do the same stuff you're doing. If you're doing nothing, they'll be perfectly happy to do nothing. And just like a human, laying inside doing nothing all the time can often make you even lazier and more lethargic. If the dog is regularly getting checkups at the vet and no medical problems have been found, I would say set an example. If you lead a more active and animated lifestyle the dog should follow. If you continue to be lazy, the dog will continue to be lazy.
To show I'm not judging, my Rott/Pitt mix can be the same way. She's an EXTREMELY high energy dog who used to bounce of walls and do all kinds of crazy stuff. She gets 1.5-2 hours of exercise daily and runs 1.5-2 miles a couple days per week, but ... when I am not exercising, at work or going out I am normally on the couch relaxing and barely moving. My dog's energy level has adapted to mine. When she is not exercising or going for a ride she's often content to curl up and be lazy next to me. Often times after several hours of it she shows alot of reluctance to get up and go do something active.
First: Vet. Make sure there is nothing wrong. At that age, thyroid issues can play havoc. A very inexpensive medication and can make a huge difference (in weight too).
pets question and answers,www.5d2d.com Second, if fit and healthy, figure out what motivates the dog and reward for interaction. If food is a motivator, use feeding time as motivation to get up and move. Try walking him with another well balanced dog. Often times another dog is all it takes.
Because of your dogs age there is a big chance that he's just lazy. If you could take him outside for awhile and try to play he might be a little active, if he is make sure that you give him a break. Pugs are brachycephalic which means their pushed in faces give them difficulty breathing from time to time. But if you truly think you dog is depressed, don't hesitate to call your vet.
I'm a dog expert so this is your answer. He is 8 years old. Think about that. Pugs usually live 12 to 14 years. So he just getting to old age. So, just spend as much time with him as you can. Take him for walks every day, and don't feed him a lot of food.
If he is depressed, scratching and petting will not resolve this. Get him off his bum and take him for several walks a day. Dogs which appear to be lazy, fat or depressed usually have lazy owners.
You maybe noticing this more as he ages, I general dogs tend to sleep a lot, especially when they start to age. if he starts to eat less, or loses weight dramatically you might want to take him to a vet.
Yes, it could be very serious. Check his gum color, it should be pink. Any diarrhea? vomiting? no appetite? increase in water intake? abnormal urination? If yes to any of this he may be very sick.
Well He Is An Older Dog So He Is Prob Both more laziness prob because he is fat by what you said so if you think something is wrong with your dog i would suggest you take him to the vet! Good Luck:)
yea i got some pugs one brindle one fond and four pups mine there a little on the lazy side take him walking get him some exercise and give him some coffee might work.
he is starting to get up there in age but it could be a combination of everything.
If he appears lethargic, he needs to be taken to the vet.
