I got a kitten last night hes so cute and fluffy, my border collie, springer spaniel, coyote hybrid is fine with him. But my basset hound trys to bite him and wont stop crying at the door of the room hes in. He has been with cats before my cat died recently. is there any way i can get them to get along? he doesn't like guinea pigs or bunnies if that helps.
Protect the cat till it gets bigger.
Have someone keep the dog calm, and keep calm and assertive yourself (think Pack Leader like on the Dog Whisperer). You will want to rub the cat on the dog to get the smell of the cat on the dog and vice versa. Also make sure you get your scent on the cat. Eventually the dog will come to understand the kitten is a part of the pack as it will smell like your household. Make sure to protect the kitten so it doesn't get bitten. Alternatively, you can use your dog's bedding to transfer smell to the kitten.
Maybe try putting a muzzle on your dog so he can still sniff the kitten and play with it but he won't be able to bite it. This way he satisfies his curiosity while minimizing any potential harm to the kitten. You would just have to watch him to make sure he isn't pouncing on the kitten and squishing it or anything. I hope this helps, it is so nice when they grow up together and get along. Soon the kittens claws will serve as a deterrent if the dog gets out of line and they will slowly learn their place with one another.
Train the dog ... put the dog in a cage or tie it up and have the kitten go by it for a while (not to close) once the dog realizes that he cant get the kitten when you let him go he wont bother trying to get it
Yes feed him a few stray cats ... if that don't work and he still wants to eat your cat then put some hot sauce on your cats coat when he trys to eat your cat he will get a bad burning taste in his mouth unless he likes hot sauce if so sorry ........
