Dog-walking disaster?

I have 2 dogs that are both hard to manage on a leash. Right now, I am walking them separately, because they have opposite problems, but I would like to get to the point where I can walk them both comfortably at the same time.

Gypsy is a 2-year-old German Shepherd mix, and she's an angel. Best-tempered dog that I have ever owned. But she pulls on-leash like a freight train. The anti-pull harness doesn't make much of a difference. She is NOT food-motivated (we have tried at least a dozen different treats and meats), so trying to reward her for good leash behavior with treats doesn't work. I read about a product called the "gentle leader head halter ". Does this halter help, and is it harmful to the dog?

Barley is a beagle puppy. He is hell-on-wheels, and needs a lot of training (because he's a puppy). On-leash, he is a mule. He plants his butt, refuses to walk, and mouths the leash, jerking it with his head. Walking him is like trying to drag him down the road. He IS food-motivated, so treats help with his mule-behavior, but I don't know what to do about the way he is mouthing and jerking the leash. pets question and answers,www.5d2d.com

Does anybody have any advice?
The best dog training technique i've ever come across is this:

go outside with your GSD and have her on a leash. stand still and have her sit next to you.

start walking with the leg that's on her side and the second she puts ANY tension of the lead walk in the opposite direction. soon she will understand that she needs to pay attention to you at all times without any tension on the leash.

this takes a fair amount of time to master, but it's fun to do in the meantime.

i've personally never used the gentle leader but i have used the Halti, which i think is quite similar.

the Halti works like a charm, the way it works is whenever the dog pulls on the leash, it turns their head towards you forcing them to walk comfortably alongside you.

for your beagle, make walking fun for him. make it something he looks forward to.

you can do this by having him chase you (don't chase him, he should chase you) with the leash on it so he feels comfortable with enjoying himself while having the leash on. pets question and answers,www.5d2d.com

when he sits down and refuses to move, do not give in to him; you will jusst be training him that "if you don't want to walk, sit down and don't listen to me and i'll give in" pull the leash not too hard, but hard enough to get him on his feet and moving again whenever he does this. don't give in.

good luck.
anti pull harness? WTF is that?

a harness is used FOR pulling ... see dogs that pull sled ... for example ... OR HORSES

So why take a device used FOR pulling and make it ANTI? WTF is wrong with people

get a prong for the GSD and the beagle ... and TRAIN them to walk correctly
Yep. Prong collar for both. Learn how to place it on the neck and when to correct.

ok well barley and gypsy have more similar problems than you think. they both think there te alpha and in charge. gypsy thinks shes leading you 2 "hunt" for food. dogs should be walking next to you so everytime she walks ahead try with all your might not to move but stay where you are and say "walk nice" or someting along those lines. and she should eventualy notice you stoped and stop to and you dont move untill se returns to your side keep trying untill she gets it and im almost positive se will it just takes time.

ok and barley well maybe your walking too far my puppy had te same problem when se was young. if im right you had gypsy first so you used to dogs having long walks but little puppies and little dogs in gerneral dont walk as far so try goin a little farther every day. another problem is if te ground is too wet or too cold or too hot she might be too sesitive to walk so maybe its just wasnt working ... my dog (mini poodle) wont walk in te snow or when te ground is very hot.oh and you might wanna try a harness with barley too because when he stops and you tug on the leash you tugging in his throght which cant give a very positive memory with walking

another thing that is very important to remember is dogs are still partialy wild so if you think about it dogs used to hunt for their food.im not saying let your dog eat wat they find on their walk.just give them thier meal AFTER their walk they might walk better knowing they earned their food. another thing id i know you would like to walk and go but if you dog stops to sniff something let them stop they will be less wild inside once they have gotten to be outside and enjoy it
No pull harnesses are scams, plain and simple. With the Gentle Leader kind (with the clip in the front) i've seen dogs learn to pull in a number of strange ways (including sideways and backwards). Some dogs can even pull right out of them. And a determined dog will NOT respond to the mild discomfort that the other kind causes - i've seen a few learn to hop up on their hind legs to pull (they would tuck their front legs in to combat the discomfort of the straps).
