Ok first off, she's an old pom. I pulled in the driveway to see her on the porch. First thought was "what she doing outside" then i noticed the blood!!! I slammed the car into park and ran as fast as I could to the porch and was quickly checking her over trying not to hurt her thinking she was hit by a car. I picked up the phone to call my dad's gf to see if she could pick the kids up from school. My first instinct was to rush her to the vet.
I took her in the house and started to check her over more because I couldn't see any injury but noticed her scratching ALOT. I searched everywhere, then I noticed the blood spots on the floor in the shape of a paw. I checked out her paws to find that one of her toe nails is either broke or missing .. I don't want to touch it because I don't want to hurt her.
So I calmed down alot and decided that maybe I should wait until the vet opens back up at 3 pm .. 2 hours from now to avoid that extremely costly emergency hours bill.
Is there anything a vet can do besides clean it up? Apparently she is scratching from the dog shampoo and conditioner I used last night on her. I still have no idea how she could of gotten outside unless she ran out when I was leaving this morning or maybe someone came over. What does the vet do for nail injuries? I know I had to take my Doberman in because he had a sore in between his pads and all the vet said to do was keep it clean and that cost $ 95.
If the nail is broken. At my ER facility, the vet would cut the nail off completely, placed quickstop on it to stop the bleeding and then put a bandage on. Usually, the bandage is left on for about a day. I would take her to the vet as soon as you can to prevent infection. Also sounds like your dog might be having an allergic reaction to the shampoo. Your vet can give injections to help her from itching and send home with some oral antihistamines.
If it is just a broken toe nail, the vet will clean it up and bandage it if it is still bleeding or the quick is exposed. Sometimes they prescribe antibiotics, but that depends on the vet.
If you don't take the dog tom the vet, the nail could become infected and could require minor surgery if you don't take them now.
Take her to the vet, if I found my dog like that I wouldn't be asking a question on yahoo.
One of my dogs broke a nail once and we took him to the vet. Turned out my dog needed mild surgery. The vet had to put him under with anaesthetic and had to cauterize the nail to ensure the bleeding would stop. I seriously think you should take your dog to the vet the first chance you get.
