Help! puppy snotty poop, then reg poop?
We got a 12 week old puppy exactly one week ago. Her poop was normal as soon as we brought her home, then it got softer, and softer. By Sunday she was pooping out only snotty mucous, and would not eat. Then by that evening she was fine and eating her regular food. Then Tuesday it happened again ... no eating her food, and pooping the snot. Then yesterday she was having perfect poops again, and eating normal. Now this morning when she woke up, she wouldn't eat her food, and started with the snotty stuff again? I have never seen any worms in her poop, and she acts fine. Does anyone have any idea what this could be ... I mean why is it good one day then bad and then good again? Ugh!
answer: Has this puppy seen a vet since you brought him home? You should have brought him to your own vet within 48 hours of bringing him home.
Any puppy with diarrhea needs a vet visit within a day, particularly if there is also vomiting or refusal to eat. Young pups get sicker, faster than adult dogs and they need prompt veterinary attention.

Many things can cause the stool changes that you are mentioning, which is generally called Colitis: parasites (like worms or giardia), infection, stress, dietary indiscretion, food intolerance, etc. And yes, the variation back and forth between normal stools and soft, mucousy ones is also common with Colitis.

First question - when was she last wormed?
Second question - did you switch her food when you brought her home, without doing it gradually?
Either could be causing this.
As she's 12 weeks only , if she's not had her vaccinations yet, obviously you'll need to see your vet at which point I'd go armed with a stool sample to get it tested (and yes, I'm thinking Coccidia, or Giardia). There's no point guessing, when she needs to be checked over by your vet.
She still may have worms even though you cannot see any. Most of the time, you cannot visually see the worms since they are microscopic. I would recommend taking her to the vet and having a fecal done to make sure that she does not have worms before worrying about something being wrong with her.
the best thing you can do is make an appointment with your vet and bring in a fresh sample of the snotty poop and explain the situation going on.

If I were you, I would take a FRESH stool sample into the Vet's and ask them to specifically check for Coccidia and Giardia.
COCCIDIA !!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ... pets question and answers,www.5d2d.com
NOT "worms".
NOT diet!
COCCIDIA=go to vet, buy ALBON & use it.
Do NOT need a fecal ... do NOT need to haul dog ... just buy the correct meds.
