Do you agree with this about dogs?
ok so if i were to come on here and ask people if an hour and a half walk each day for a chihuahua was too much they would say yes and that im overwalking him. well today in the paper i read that breed or size has nothing to do with endurance. basically, it doesnt matter what breed of dog it is ... or how small or big it is .. its about endurance. if you start off with short walks, and build your way up slowly, you can walk your dog for long periods of time. do you agreE?

You can try and build their endurance sure, but some dogs/breeds will not excel as others nor live up to the task because of breed, weight, health issues, etc. Most breeds will keep up or try to at least out of loyalty and drop dead the moment you stop. *.*

Absolutely. some dogs have higher energy levels. And it also depends on how they wear themselves out. Some dogs just NEED to run. Doesn't matter how often you walk them, they just NEED to flat out run. Like a greyhound or a wolfhound. Some need more exercise than others. Dalmatians are known for their endurance.

Basically you can build up a dogs endurance through more exercise if what this paper claims. Which is the same as saying, you can take longer runs if you train for them.

I disagree on one point. Some dogs, especially larger dogs need to have their joints taken into consideration. Over exercising can be an issue, especially at a young age.

No one with any smarts would say that it's too much for a Chihuahua. You made that up.

It DOES matter what breed of dog it is. Most of the short nosed breeds have problems walking in heat or cold.

You need to adjust for the dog . 1.5 hours of walking wouldn't be close to enough for your average border collie, and I can tell you that my dog would come back and want to run.

Walking isn't great exercise. It's pretty easy for most dogs, no matter their size.

Yes, it's true that with most dogs that if you build them up to a longer period of time, they should be able to do it. It's not a matter of agreeing - it's fact.

Theoretically, yes. However, it really depends on the breed of the dog. Like, some dogs have shorter muzzles that can cause breathing problems for the dog if they're overworked (like the pug). Other dogs may have health concerns that cause a dog's endurance to be inhibited. Weight, breed, and health all affect a dog's endurance. It's the same for humans. A 200 pound guy is NOT going to work his way up to running 2K very easily. He'd have to loose weight first. Same thing for dogs. pets question and answers,www.5d2d.com

As I said, Theoretically, it would work. But some dogs have their limits. They can't tell you "Hey, I'm tired, let's sit down". They'll either plop their asses down somewhere (like mine does XD) or worse.

That paper is wrong, or lacks the evidence to support that claim. You should question them and see if they did an experiment with different breeds of different sizes.

Whoever said that is being ridiculous; of course you can walk your chihuahua for long periods of time. What you should be careful of is cold weather walks (make sure he's got some kind of sweater they get cold easy) or hot weather walks (bring plenty of water). Keep an eye on him, start with shorter walks and build up his stamina . If he looks overly tired, pick him up and carry him home.

My Mia Chihuahua would keep going as long as we went at her pace and she knew she could go either a long way or a shorter way. When she was in her teens she would also sit down when she was tired and I would of course pick her up. She lived to be 17 1/2 years old. She weighed 4 lbs and walked every where with me. She walked and I have a motorized wheelchair. I agree as long as she is not panting or being pushed or pulled. Dogs have legs and like to run. Mia preferred the sidewalk to wet grass. She also did not wear a leash. She was told to stay ahead of me and did exactly as she was told. She also knew right from left and where the gutter is. She knew wait and hurry. She was very well mannered and knew where to turn to go to Pet co. Mia chased birds in the park. Her favorite was to scatter a flock of starlings. She could do the entire park in an hour. When Pepper the neutered long hair came with us it took 1 1/2 hrs as little guys need to mark a lot.

No, I do not agree. With some breeds it takes little exercise to over -heat them or make them sick, mostly Brachycephelic breeds like Pugs, Pekingese and Bulldogs though. Dogs aren't Humans, they don't have the build-up and the same athletic "rules" as us.

my papillon will walk all day if someone would take her.

Actually, you're right!
No matter what the size of the dog, they can be walked for as long as they need.
I honestly think that you are walking your dog for the PERFECT amount of time.
