As far as the first pup goes. They are good with kids and animals IF trained and socialized properly AND provided with a good job. If you want a couch potato dog, a catahoula mix isn't for you. They are very much still a working breed so prey drive can be an issue. I honestly don't see any GSD in that catahoula, but its a mix of something. Plenty of training AND exercise/work are a must. Depending on personality expect a dog that will not warm up to strangers right away. Expect a dog that's going to howl/bay. Expect a dog that will counter surf if given a chance. Crating is ALSO a must, a bored hula can and will destroy anything it can get its teeth on, and get a GOOD crate. No cheap plastic ones. If you live someplace where critters are common if the drive is in the pup be prepared to have a present brought to you. Second pup: A number of breeds carry for black and tan, but first guess is a shepherd or another hound mix.
As for which you should pick? Go off what the shelter people know about either pup and decide which is a better fit for you.
Dog one looks like a Catahoula Leopard Dog mix, honestly I can't pinpoint anything BUT Catahoula Leopard Dog. MAYBE a Great Dane, but I barely see it. Look up the breed.
