Depends, if you are getting it for you, or your family. If it is for you, Try a gerbil. Gerbils are the cutest little creatures, but they take a little bit of responsibility. Gerbils you need to change their water everyday, no matter how much is in there. They require fresh water like us. They bedding needs to be changed about once a couple weeks. By the way, I recommend Carefresh bedding. They need a wheel, food, in a bowl, and a medium size cage. DO NOT FORGET! Never get a gerbil without a buddy. You need to buy two at once. They will be from the same litter, and love each other forever.
If you want a hamster, they need just about as much care as gerbils. So fresh water, bedding changes, food, and exercise. Guinea pigs are very adorable too, just a lot bigger. Try not to get two, that will occupy a LOT of space with extra care. Don't get a female and a male, they will tend to breed, A LOT. Guinea pigs are awesome and adorable, gerbils are also very adorable.

Guinea pigs also need their space sometimes, but need their love.
I would recommend gerbils. But you make your own choice.
Ive had many guinea pigs and i prefer them muchmuchmcuh more than a gerbil because if you think about it gerbils are fidgety shy Little creatures and guinea pigs act more like dogs the like to play and cuddle!!! i used to have a harness and lash i got at pet smart and my guinea pig used to love going for walks!

I find they are much easier to handle then Gerbils.
Guinea pigs are more trusting towards you and more reliable to let run around.
Gerbils would end up running away from you on the ground and hiding.
