I bought a grey Gerbil, Einstein (cuz it is sooo darn smart) yesterday, female. Then I wanted to buy another because I heard more than one can extend their life and they're just cute. So I bought a black female one Bully (cause it starts fights with my gray one) and at first they were smelling each other but in ten or so minutes there is mass commotion. Einstein tried to run away but Bully keeps on, well, bullying it. I separated them but once they were together, ten or so minutes later, more fighting. They were in a ball too, and when I whacked them both with an object they paid no attention to me. And pulling one in the air by the tail, they both just clung to each other and kept fighting. The second fight left them both bleeding lightly under the neck and Einstein has a very tiny patch of fur missing. They came from two different litters, one in one cage and the other from another group cage. So I washed them, soap and water to erase the smell, they're dried off fine, and so far, no fighting. But only because when Einstein goes to Bully, I push her away. But she's so sweet, she only wants to play with her . Bully is more of a loner and I get the feeling is not interested in play. What can I do for these two? They're both sweet pets, no malicious intent, but I cannot imagine if I went to work and came back with one or both of them dead or badly injured. I did go to the store for about ten minutes or so and when I came back they were right where I left them, so, MAYBE things are getting better???
OH MY GOODNESS ITS A GERBIL NOT A HAMSTER! Okay, now that thats clear ...:) Females can be a bit territorial, but there is hope! First, separate your girls. I use those little critter keepers. Now, divide the tank, I just tape a sturdy aquarium divider into place. switch them every day, my girls generally pick up scents in a week. Voila! They'll get along just great. It helps that Bully will get lonely and want to be around Einstein. Keep the two sides completely bare of toys, just a food dish and a water bottle. Also, be careful washing them, they can get too cold pretty easily since they're originally desert animals. And although it was necessary at the time, don ' t grab their tails, because they'll literally come off in your hand. (yuck. ..) Good luck!:)
Female gerbils fighting is very common as they can be very terrotorial, even sisters can fight badly. However by what you have explained is going on they are not going to get on so seperate them immediatly otherwise another fight will break out and one or both of your gerbils may die from exessive bleeding or injury ....
females are more territorial than males you can never have 2 females in the same cage they will kill each other. you have to buy another if you want to keep both. or you can but two males all my males got along great.
Buy two males. Males aren't all freaky and territorial. The mistake you made was buying a FEMALE rather than a male after your first hamster. Also, if you can get the males to breed with the females: BABY HAMSTERS.
They will kill each other unless you put them into separate cages, sorry.
Train the one who starts the fight. If you can't train her, find a trainer. Separate their rooms. If you don't have upstairs, put one in your room or any bedroom and 1 at the living room so that they will not fight make sure on the room there's food and water and in the living room food and water also. and keep the door closed so that one will not go out
