One of my rats is pretty old (2 1/2) and is getting weak and sickly. I think she may die soon because she has some of the textbook signs-doing strange things like eating bedding, losing interest in her favorite games and treats , moving slowly and sleeping by herself. I'm not worried-I've known all along they have short lifespans and I'm ready to let her go whenever it's time. I just am curious about what exactly it's like to lose a pet . These rats are my first pets. When you discovered your small animal pet was dead, was it traumatic or gross or sad or what? Did you have him or her put down, or did they die from an injury or disease? What did you do with the body? Did you have a funeral? I know this is kind of morbid but I just want to be prepared and I k ow it would make me feel better to know the personal experiences of others.
I'm sorry about your rat. She has been lucky to have you.
I had my mouse Chip for five years he died this past Sept 28.
He died of old age. About a week before he died I noticed he was sleeping longer than usual and moving slowly and appeared weaker in his legs.

On his last day, He barely had any strength to move. He lied down on a cotton nest he'd built for himself
and passed away right there.
It was very very sad and I cried so much. I felt glad he was comfy on his bed and he was in a safe place with me sitting with him. I was talking to him the whole time cuz I wanted him to hear my voice.
I miss him so much.
I bought a wooden box at the crafts store and painted it nice and buried him in my garden. I bought a small granite plaque engraved with his name on it to mark where he is.
My hamster got ink poisoning. He got out and ate some inked paper. A few days later, Is cheeks got filled with dirt and grime and puss came out of his ears. His eyes turned red a crusted over. He died the night we were going to take him to the vet the next day. And it happened to be the same day the pet store's warranty ended.
I've had many many many pets but only two stand out to me the most. I rescue rabbits and guinea pigs (though 99.9% rabbits) from abusive situations or neglect. Lucky was a tiny 7 week old baby rabbit. She was fluffy and brown with black tipped ears. We called her Lucky because she was our 7th rescue (lucky number 7). unfortunately her name didn't fit her very well. We brought her home knowing she wasn't alright. I didn't research until dawn before i discovered her true age. We tried feeding her a special diet for baby rabbits weaned to early but she wouldn't eat. we brought some of our other rabbits in to play but she wouldn't play. In the morning i called an emergency vet to rush her over there. i checked on Lucky, made the call, then walked into the next room to get her ready to go. she died on the way. she hadn't lived with us more than 20 hours. the store we got her from had her stuffed in a box at only a few weeks old and shipped from Europe to be sold here. that's what killed her.
pets question and answers,www.5d2d.com The other one that stands out happened not much later than Lucky. Our 5th rescue, Ashley, was pregnant. We had no idea until we found babies one morning. She had 8. The babies would hang on when she jumped out of the nest after feeding them and wouldn't be able to get back in the nest. Bella (one of the babies) fell out of the cage one morning. i went out to check on them and found her wedged between the tray and leg of the cage. i rushed her inside to warm her with a hot towel and then called for help. we heated her on a heating pad and with a hairdryer set on low. when she stopped breathing we tried rabbit CPR but we couldn't brin gher back. she died of hypothermia at only 4 days old. the rest of the babies are now about 6 months old and doing very well.
