My guinea pig, Elliot, is being treated for mange mites. He just got his first of three injections a few days ago. This morning he had no fur on a spot on his neck and when I came home from work he was bleeding from his neck.
What should i do for the sores? Should i let them go? Cover them so he doesn't keep biting or itching? Just wash them? Put a cone over his head?
Hi!
Are you giving ivermectin injections, or is a vet giving them? I'm asking because the injections of ivermectin can actually burn the piggy and are quite painful. If you are working with a vet, ask to see if you can give oral ivermectin ( the sort used for horses, like Zimmectrin) instead. 3 doses at 1-2 week intervals should clear up mange mites. You can give a monthly or bi monthly little dose if there's a change of re infestation. The dose for an adult cavy is about the amount needed to cover the tip of a Q-Tip after the cotton is removed - just a teensy bit! It's strong stuff. Find an experienced local hobby breeder of cavies or a good rescue group to help you.
pets question and answers,www.5d2d.com To make Elliot more comfortable, just dab off the bloody spot with cool water and a cotton ball. You can put "Bag Balm," Neosporin, or even honey on the open sores. Don't use Neosporin in deep wounds.
Guinea pigs are very delicate animals. Vets are always the best options when possible, but definitely clean the sores and stop the bleeding. Covering the sore is probably a good idea but he may tear the cover off. Pay extra attention to him to make sure he's not making it worse. Multiple injections are of course needed, as they do not immediately stop the problem. Also, make sure to clean his cage and his belongings.
I hope Elliot gets better.
