i have my 2 dwarf hamsters in an iron cage and the female just gave birth to 7 babies, i use stacks of paper as bedding the problem is there's too much bedding everywhere so every once in a while i find one of the babies in a corner alone and the mother hamster cant see him so i place him near her again, i'm concerned that some babies will get lost in the bedding and die? what should i do?
, I also heard that if she feels threatened she might eat the babies how do i clean the cage with out scaring her? Will removing her from the cage before cleaning it help?
1 - Separate the 2 dwarf hamsters into different cages. Do not put them back together - ever.
2 - Get some real bedding, like Care Fresh
3 - DO NOT TOUCH THE BABIES OR CLEAN THE CAGE. That's how the mom will neglect the babies and eat them. Let nature take it's course.
Separate the adult hamsters. Put the mother with the babies and the other one somewhere else . Not sure if the mother eats the babies when threatened, but I know she will kill them if her instincts tells her a baby is ill. Just move any stray babies back to the mother and watch her! Good luck.
Ok heres what to do. place your momma and babies in a different cage. a small one will do. put a hiding place in there and use a clean rag for bedding and make sure the babies stay with the mom and watch closely at the moms behavior! Good luck!
Uh ohhhhhhh ...!
pets question and answers,www.5d2d.com Do you have a male and female together?
Well, take him out, she'll be pregnant again in the next 18 hours if you don't and this is cruel if it happens because it is back to back breeding and very dangerous for the mother and because shes already using all her energy making milk for the young then having another litter .... You get the idea.
But anyway, a good idea is to place tissue in the bottom of the cage and get some and chop it and place it in the cage, then in the beding area use strips of tissue for it. To get them out don't use your hands, get a dustpan and brush and push them onto it with a spoon or something with the mum, then place them in a cardboard box with some bedding.
Clean the cage and try and get some woodshavings and chopped up paper that is very soft and warm.
Then when you're done, tip some olf bedding in the cage lightly so mums scent is still in there. Then gently tip them out into the cage and mum will take him into the bed.

I doubt the mum will lose the babies because she'll be awake at night checking the cage, make sure shes in a dark area thats not noisy so she don't feel so threatened otherwise, she might eat the cage.
I hope I helped.
