My guinea pig is lonely and I cant afford another one: (I want him to come out and play with me but I think he's too scared. He'll run away and hide even before I touch him so it's very hard to hold him. What can I do?
Anna-Actually, you're wrong. Guinea pigs are not like hamsters. Guinea pigs in the wild consist of large groups, so even as pets they are really social (with each other). They need a friend. In addition, you said "other rodents." Rats need to live with a friend too, and mice!
Just be patient. Naturally, guinea pigs are shy and timid (they ARE prey animals after all). It takes a little time to earn their trust. Once you do, they are amazing pets. Try hand feeding him. Offer him a baby carrot . If he runs from you too much, don't chase him with the carrot.
Guinea pigs at most rescues and shelters are very lost cost, around 10 dollars for some. Pet stores are around 30 for each guinea pig I believe.
Well you've got to remember that guinea pigs naturally hide and run, you have to make a trust bond between you and your pet. Depending on if he's new or old, if he is a new guinea pig, this is exactly normal, but if he is an older guinea pig, you should REALLY try to get another one, just imagine having to be around a bunch of people in a cage that spoke a different language that you would NEVER understand. Wouldn't that drive you insane? If getting another one is NOT an option, hold him, spend a lot of time with him/her so you can make his life as nice as possible. Hope this helps!=)
try playing with him more, get some friends over some more, maybe give him more attention. you can try getting a friend that has a guinea pig to come to your house, if you cant afford one you can start saving up (maximum amount of money you need to take care of a guinea pig is about $ 140). in the mean time give him more attention.
Perhaps, if you manage to get a hold of him, you could hold him in a blanket so that if he feels nervous he can hide and snuggle inside it. I think as long as they have somewhere to hide where they can feel secure, they will be more likely to let you hold them. I have rabbits and it is different, but after I've manage to catch them they're generally find to let me hold them. I hope this is a little helpful!
how long have you had him? if its only been a short time, he might not be comfortable with you yet. I have had 2 guinea pigs for about 4 years now. One will let me pet her and is comfortable with me. The other one , however, freaks out and runs away whenever i try and pet her, even through ive never hurt and take very good care of both of them. Depends on the pig i guess.
The Answer Master-You're such a smart ***!
pets question and answers,www.5d2d.com Guinea Piga, like other rodents and rodent-like pets, don't get lonely. Trust me. Unless they wanna breed, they probably would be more happy without another animal with them.
They like cheerios, try luring him out with those.
