I bought a male guinea pig around six months ago, his name is Cosmo. Recently he started knocking over his food bowl and pulling his hay out from its container thingy, he pushes it all around the cage making a mess and starts whining for more food . When I give him more he just does the same thing and refuses to eat it. I can't put it back in the container because he wont eat it and I also don't want him eating something he may have peed on or something . He is all alone in his cage, I thought about getting him a friend but I was told male piggys should be alone I also don't have a big enough cage for two. Is there any reason he could be doing this? Sorry for such a long description:]
Sounds like my little guy when he doesn't get what he wants! We clean his cage, put everything in neatly, and three hours later it's an absolute mess! We make sure he always has some carrot, or apple or something else he likes, he has a special chew toy (Which he throws around), hay rack on the side of his cage he pulls hay out of and then sits on it, and runs around and stirs everything up.

We also make sure he has fresh grass, as much as possible (no grass clippings or sprays on it). We also got him a small ceramic dog bowl. Because it's larger and flatter, he can't tip it over.
Who told you two male piggies can't be together? If you don't plan on breeding, same sex is the way to go! You just have to be careful when you introduce them, but they are social animals. My little guy is around me nearly 24/7, as most of my time is in the bedroom (We don't have a great deal of space as we currently live with my in laws), and his cage is at the end of our bed. It's not the same as a companion, but he's rarely alone.
Also, check out guinea lynx. They have some food charts ... if he's not getting the food he wants and that's what's causing him to act out, try a few on the list. He could also just be keeping himself entertained.
GPs do this all the time. If he really is not eating ANYTHING for more than 24-48 hours then I would be worried, but often they eat in the middle of the night and just throw their food around in the day, Its perfectly safe for him to eat pellets that are dumped around the cage. I have had male and female GPs and they all do this.
uhh yeah. maybe he doesnt like the food you give him, or maybe he needs a wider variety of foods including pellets, seeds, hay, grass, carrot, mint and parsley.
pets question and answers,www.5d2d.com I have a guinea pig, he used to do that a little bit too. I give him some mint, apple, parsley and a mix of guinea pig food everyday. Keep in mind though not to give hime too many vegetables otherwise he will get diarrhoea or very very runny poo. Also you shouldnt give rabbits lettuce because it is poisonous, so i'm guessing its the same for guinea pigs.
My two boys move things around in there cages all the time. So it really doesn ' t worry them if things are out of place.
He is probably just bored and lonely. A friend for him will probably be a good idea for him.
Also they actually eat there own poo sometimes so don't worry about them eating things that have waste on them.
My piggie does this too, she even piddles in her pellet bowl! Piggies arent the cleanest of rodents, you have to meticulous about the cleanliness of its cage, as you know piggies pee a lot and as they drink they let the watter drip all over the bedding.
sounds to me like hes pissed off, guinea pigs are social critters they crave companionship get him a buddy, if hes fixed a fixed female would work best. but to boys will also work if there is no female anywhere around. that's what I would do.
... but is he eating his first bowl of food? If he is dropping his food, that is usually a sign of a dental problem, in which case he is probably losing weight as well. He would need to be seen by a vet to trim the teeth.
guinea pigs eat off off the floor - it's natural guinea behavior! He will eat when he want's to. Don't worry
do you give him any treats? fresh veggies?
He is having a grand old time here, He tips his bowl because he can. same thing for t eh hay. You need to get a bowl that he can not tip, i found one at the pet store that is only 1 1/2 "high and about 4" across, it was only $ 9.99 and has never been tipped!! You need to make a wire case like something out of chicken wire, and put his hay in it so he can pull it out to eat it but cant mess it up. Or you can shop at the feed and see store where you get a flake for around 4 or 5 dollars so you do not mind if they play in it. Go to my You Tube site and view a Good Buy.
