iv had hamsters in the past but only ever dwarf hamsters, I went to the pet shop to buy a new one and i decided on a Syrian hamster. I showed the lady my cage that I had previously kept a dwarf hamster in and she told me it would be fine. Any thoughts or idea's on this as I'm a little worried it may be to small. also the wheel i got doesn't connect to my cage. would a free standing one be ok?
Don ' t trust the lady at the pet shop. It really irritates me how so many cages sold by pet shops as being suitable for Syrian hamsters are actually way too small - good for you for thinking about this!!
Because Syrians are actually quite large animals, they need a fairly big cage. These are some really decent sized ones for a Syrian:

What type of cage do you have now, or what are the dimensions for it? Can you post a photo?
Usually it shouldn't be a cage meant for a dwarf hamster, but it will work fine until your hamster starts growing and gets big. Syrians are supposed to have cages at least 200 sq. inches, including 2nd and 3rd levels. If your cage is just shy of this, it's fine until your hamster gets big. If it's less than ... I'd say 120 sq. inches, get a new one. So it'll work fine for now, but consider getting a bigger cage in the future. Maybe this one:

If you know the model of the cage, please say, also what are the dimensions of it if you don't have the cage model?
pets question and answers,www.5d2d.com Hopefully the actuall floor space, without levels is roughly at least 40cm long. My dwarf hamster has a 55cm long cage to himself and he also has a shelf and a free standing wheel and toys.
If the cage you have can fit a food bown in, bed, wheel and a toy in, it should be fine until he grows.
Hope I helped.
Well the lady at the store is a liar. Most cages for hamsters aren't good for a syrian hamster. Since that type of hamster is the biggest of them all, I would recommend getting a bigger cage. But first make sure your new hamster can fit in the tunnels, if your cage has them. Also the wheel you choose will be just fine for your hamster. So your answers are. 1. Your wheel is fine. 2. You cage is most likely to small. Unless the cage you had was for more than 2 dwarf hamsters. If not you should get another cage. I would recommend this one.

Well do you have like a link or anything to the cage?? The lady at the store might be lying to make money, I have a syrian hamster and the cage I have for him is for rats, guinea pigs, etc but and its still only a little small for him. Most hamster cages are for dwarfs, just let us see a link and we'll know ....
How big is the cage? Most dwarf hamster cages will fit one hamster perfectly=) If it fits probably 2 dwarf hamsters well, then she'll be fine=P The standing wheel will be fine, just make sure its safe for them and they won't get their leg caught (This hasn't ever happened to me, but better safe than sorry!=D). Good luck and I hope I helped !=:-)
yeah i thnk it will be ok
pets question and answers,www.5d2d.com just until she gets big because shell get stuck in the tubes as u already know and that would be a lot of trouble getting her out!
yea a free standing one will be just fine, i use a free standing one (for now)
If the woman says its fine then it should be. I had a free standing wheel and it was fine. Span better than the ones that connected to the cage.
syrian hamsters are especially tasty .... put hamster in microwave for 30 minutes on high power
i learnt that in ATL
We need the measurements of the cage before we can answer your question ....
congradulations!
