I've never owned mice, but since no one else is answering this question, I think I'll give it a shot. I do own guinea pigs, and I live in a college dorm so we have had to get very creative with their housing. pets question and answers,www.5d2d.com

PVC pipe makes a nice alternative to those expensive critter tubes. You can line them with duct tape so it will be easier for your mice to grip up on them. Whatever direction you go with your cage, duct tape is a must, and it's also cheap. I wouldn't use mesh. I'd assume they will chew through that. For my guinea pigs, we use these snap-together grid shelf things. Here is a photo of some: http://images.craigslist.org/3k23m63pb5Y ...

Not sure if they will have them at Bunnings, but I know they have them at walmart for $ 15 or so. They are nice because you can still hook things up to them like a wheel or a water bottle. Speaking of which, don't forget the basic stuff: wheel, water bottle, food bowl. You should google homemade mouse cage and look at the photos for inspiration.

Also, if you decide you don't want to go the homemade route, there are tons of cages online that you can get for $ 50. You could even buy a large cage (like a rabbit cage or ferret cage) and modify it by connecting tubberware to make shelves and things like that. You can connect the tubberware with zip ties (that way it won't be permanent and you can change it later if you decide you don't like it. There are many options here.

That is a good site:) how ever you will want to get hardware cloth (Thats what the "mesh" you are talking baout is called, so when yo go there just ask them for that) that has smaller spacing since you have mice not rats. And with the shelves and levels and things i would suggest either getting fleece or rolled flooring, something solid to cover the wired flooring with. Because wired flooring can lead to bumble foot (very nasty you dont want that!)

You can also try to make a cage out of an old cabinet or entertainment center. Thats what i did for my rats and it is HUGE!!!: DI just covered the shelves in flooring so it would be water proof and then i cut a hole in the door and covered it and the front with mesh. It only cost about $ 50 (would have been less but i had to buy plywood to cover the back with because the old backing got wet and warped) I got the entertainment center on craigslist for $ 20, but that might be a little big since you have mice and not rats lol

And FYI the other person on here said that they can chew through mesh, they cant. I know from experience.
