Hamster Care .................?

Im getting a hamster in the next week or 2 but im getting the cage, food, bedding, Ect. Before i get the hamster.

Now the pet store gave me sawdust & said it was ok but i've heard that sawdust is bad for hamsters, so if sawdust is bad what shall i get? I've heard that wood chippings are good for hamsters but i've also hear their bad .... i dunno who to believe can anyone help???
Sawdust will be fine, most sawdust sold at pet shops is actually what many other people call wood shavings - they like to make it as confusing as possible XD

Dust extracted wood shavings/sawdust is best, it's a lot less likely to cause respiratory problems. To be honest most sawdust/wood shaving products sold in pet shops should be safe.

Wood chippings (ie. the little blocks of solid wood that many people use for snakes) tend to be a little sharp for small rodents to live in, and can damage pouches too. Best avoid them. Wood chippings:

You also need some nesting material your hamster can make a bed with. Long strands of bedding, and soft cotton wool-like bedding can become stuck in your hamster's pouches (although this has never happened to me), so you might want to avoid them .

Enjoy your hammie:)
Hi there,

I would recommend Carefresh bedding as it is fluffy and good for hamsters paws, absorbs a lot and is easy to get out of the packet. It is alsoenvironmentallyy friendly.

this is what carefresh looks like in the packet and out of the packet:

I know it does not look very appealing but trust me hamsters love it

it is laos a lot better than sawdust which causes respiration problems in animals
I use bunny nature bed o'limum, it is a great bedding keeps clean and does not smell upto a least 14 days, we only need to clear the wet areas every couple of days. A breeder suggested to me and she has over 200 hamsters and swears by it. you can get it online from bunny or from a couple of others.
DON'T PANIC!:) Hamsters love sawdust! it's fine for them, i use it all the time with mine, you can also use wood chippings but sawdust is better! pets question and answers,www.5d2d.com

Hope this helped:)
both are fine.
