So ive looked at a bunch of websites and stuff! I have already heard about Syrian hamsters and dwarf hamsters what are other hamster that arnt those kind? What cage should i get and what are some good names! What gender should i get? Thanks
I don't really like syrains; they tend to be quite grumpy, are quick to bite, and should have a pretty big cage due to their size. A lot of the cages sold in pet shops as being suitable for syrain hamsters are actually too small.
Robo's are little and cute, but are very quick and can be hard to handle and tame.
My favourite type of hamster has to be Chinese Dwarf Hamsters. I love them:)
Out of all my hamsters, my Chinese fur babies have been the easiest to handle and tame. They're about the size of a mouse, so only require a small (ish) cage, although of course the bigger is always the better! They are absolutely beautiful, and have the biggest black eyes ever, and they also have a short tail, unlike syrians, russians and robo's. My last Chinese hamster was adopted, and it took just two weeks to tame her, and she has even learnt some tricks. Would definitely consider getting Chinese hamsters before any other sort: D
I had a dwarf and a black syrian hamster and even though i liked both, the black syrian is much much friendlier than the dwarfs that are naturally aggressive. Get a medium sized 2 to 3 floor cage and bathe your hamster like 1-2 times a month with shampoo they sell at the pet store. And also I recommend you get a ball so that they can spend a little time outside their cage.
The different types are:

Syrian (also called teddy bear hamsters)
Chinese
Russian dwarf
Roborovski
Campbell dwarf
As this will be your first hamster I recommend the Syrian as they are (generally) the easiest to hold and more tame then the other breeds. (Saying this though some Syrians hate to be held, it just depends on the individual hamsters temperament).
Syrians MUST be kept as a single hamster.
If you want more then one then go for a Russian or Campbell dwarf or Roborovskis (they suggest at least three roborovskis though)
For gender my hamster book says male syrians are generally better tempered but I've always had females and all of them have had fantastic temperaments.
For cages this is what I suggest:
http://www.dabners.co.uk/product-5305-sa ... I had this cage and it is fantastic, a lot of hamster cages are far too small but this is a great size and fairly easy to clean.

As for names I generally name my hamsters either after their colour or because of a certain behaviour.
Suggestions:
(If the hamster is mainly black:)
Sooty
Blacky
Coal
Midnight
Beauty
(Mainly white:)
Snowy
Snowball
Crystal
Pearl
(Mainly brown:)
Rusty
(Mainly grey:)
Sooty
Misty
Silver
Dusty
I have owned both Syrian and russian dwarf hamsters in the past. However I found that Syrian hamsters are larger and much more friendier. Be very aware that Russian Dwarf hamsters and other smaller types of hamsters are very vicious and I have not come across one yet that will not go out of its way to bite an owner when gently handling them.
If you are looking for a small rodent type of animal why not also consider gerbils, they are very easily tamed and will only bite if scared. Unlike hamsters ....
