I've had my Robo hamster for 6 months and he has just started to chew the bars of his cage. He has plenty of chew toys and two multi-level cages all to himself. I even recently purchased two new toys. Perhaps it is because there is less room in the cage with the new toys? Help! Any suggestions would be much appreciated!
Hamsters are rodents and as with most rodents, have a need to chew to keep their teeth properly sized. The chewing helps wear down their teeth, which continuously grow throughout their lives. You need to provide something else for the hamster to chew on. There are "chew sticks" that are available at many Wal-Marts and at pet stores that hamsters enjoy.
He probably wont stop, regardless what you do.
I also have a hamster and he has done it since i got him (one year ago)
The best advice to give you is what you have already done with the toys but you could also try giving him a carrot but have one there all the time, that way he can grew and get a nice taste.
Hamsters generally chew the bars on their cage when they are bored or agitated or when they want more space or want to come out. get into a routine of taking it out at a certain time. hope this helps=)
My hammie does that when he's bored or wants my attention; he'll probably stop on his on though since you've given him toys.
