i was out side tanning, and i took my rat elliot out with me, i made sure there was shade for him to sit under, we where out side for about a half an hour, and when i took him inside i saw that he had some red stuff around his eyes, like a circle of it around each eye, i don't no what it is? but could it be because he has red eyes? could he have been crying? help please!
As long as he isn't showing any other signs of illness than there is nothing to worry about. What you're seeing is called porphyrin, which is tinted red and excreted from the eyes and nose. Generally, when rats wake up, they'll have some dry porphyrin built up around their eyes, just like people have "eye goo" when they wake up.
If he starts sneezing, wheezing, coughing, or generally starts acting off, take him to the vet. If you see a lot of it staining his fur, in his bedding, or coming from his nose, take him immediately to a vet.
Blood is usual a sign of tears from the eye ducts.
Ratty eye and nasal mucus is tinted red and looks a lot like blood. The red tint is called porphyrin and the mucus itself is often referred to as porphyrin. Porphyrin on your rat could mean that he's a bit stressed out or that there's something in his environment irritating him, such as dust, or it could be an indication of illness.
