my neighbour just gave me a hamster because she didn't want it, which is quite lucky because i really wanted one, but i don't really know when to feed it and stuff? oh and i'm stuck on names, apollo or artemis?:)
First off, it should have fresh water everyday, and feed it once a day also. Only feed it as much as it will eat. Also, if you find it puts all it's food in it's cheeks and makes a pile of food somewhere (like in it's bed, that's what mine does) then you should not put the food in a bowl for a while.
This helps them to realize they don't have to scavenge, because the foods just there, and they will eat it only when hungry, making it easier to tell when the hamster has actually eaten the food.
I think u are supposed to just fill the little dish they have because they are just going to take what they want anyways and stuff it in their cheeks and just make sure that it has fresh water and if you can let him get some fresh airs that's great too just keep an eye on the little dish and fill it when u see it getting empty and as far as names go apollo is a good name but it all depends on the personality and what the little guy looks like mines name was Frijoles which is spanish for black beans, i named him that because he was all black with a little white dot on his head and he was shaped like a bean.
i fed mine every day, she spent at least an hour a night (remeber they are nocturnal) in her ball and was cleaned out every second night (she got grumpy when i changed it out, i think she didnt like all her nice smells dissapearing and having to re doo it all lol), her name was barbra strizan ... no im not joking , she was an impulse buy when i was a student and me n my flatmate found the name hillarious !!!...... sadly i still do .... lol

she lived for 3 and a half years which i hear is rare for hamsters so i must have been doing something right.
