One of my rats (male, just about 1yo) has suddenly started limping today. I noticed when I got home from college this evening. He is holding his left leg up as he walks, like sort of pulling it in to himself, it looks like. I've also noticed he is dragging his tail as opposed to holding it out. When I gently wiggle his leg and foot, he doesn't squeak or show any sign that it's painful. It doesn't appear swollen or red. But I've also noticed that the toes on all his other paws are sort of splayed when he is braced/alert...and the toes on the affected paw are not.
What do you think is wrong with him?: (I'm very sad. He's still only young as I've said. Does it sound like a degenerative hind limb problem? Will it get worse?: '(
Currently he is fine: able to climb up and down his ramp, eating, drinking, standing on his back legs, etc.
I feel horrible too as I am going away for the weekend on Friday .....
I would really, really appreciate any thoughts.
He probably stubbed a toe or twisted his foot. If it is not swollen, and you can touch his leg without any signs of pain, it should be okay.
pets question and answers,www.5d2d.com If he continues to nurse it and yet nothing new has developed such as any swelling, redness, or any abnormal color, you can isolate him for 24 hours in a small cage. Also make sure the cage does not have any ladders or other things he can climb on.
Keeping him calm is always important. Rats are tough pets, they usually can heal from leg injuries in a week or so. If it still persists or worsens, its good to check with a vet.
Good luck!
If your pet is limping then he/she is in pain and needs to go to the vet.
My guinea pig was found limping one day and I took her to the vet as soon as possible and it was found she broke her leg. Serious pain relief was required and thankfully she is now fully recovered, but I suggest take your loved pet to the vet .... they are trained to help animals in need.
