My gerbil that I thought was a male...?
Well Ive had this gerbil for about 19 months and he/she originally had a friend who was a male. But he ended up killing the other one when I wasnt home, and I never ought him a replacement friend because i was afraid they wouldnt get along either. My brother also had 2 gerbils, but one died from a disease a couple months ago so ive been introducing ours slowly, hoping that they might be able to live together eventually. I notice that my bros gerbils which he got from a breeder, so hes a confirmed male, is sniffinf my gerbils bum and harassing him. It almost looked like he was tring to mate, so I compare both gerbils umm parts and my gerbil looks different from his. I was wondering if theres a possability that mine is a female, because I got him from a pet store and they dont always get it right. What do you think? pets question and answers,www.5d2d.com

I think they should have check it first before they gave it to you and i know what you have gone threw it happened to me.
It could be but your brothers gerbils could be just sniffing yours to check him out.But pet stores do sometimes get it wrong try putting them in again and see what happens.
Yes it can happen anybody can make a mistake. However at that age you surly should see the male parts of the gerbil without a doubt. If you are in doubt I would not put them together if your gerbil killed once he/she is liable to do it again regardless of the sex. Some just like to be alone especially if that is what they are use to.
I'm pretty sure your gerbil is a female. I mated my hamster once, and that's what hamsters do when they mate.
Here is a picture of the different parts of the gerbils

hope it helped!
Just went through that with a pair of hamsters. Got 2 out of the "male" box, what do you know, I probably got the ONLY female in there, and she had 5 babies a few weeks later.
If the parts look noticeably different, then you probably have a female. Unless you want babies, you're gonna want to keep them separate, little critters like that don't need more than a second or two of mating to start a litter!
