Can my hamster's girth increase in one day after mating?
My female syrian hamster mated yesterday with my friends male syrian hamster. It seems that her girth has increased in one day after she mated. My parents and other friends agree that she looks heavier. Is this possible? Please help! I'm not even sure if she is pregnant! She also is very active all of today!
because it only takes around 17 days for hamster babies to develop it is very possible that she would get bigger the consecutive day. for my hamster it took 2 days to notice a difference but she was a teddy-bear hamster and beings that Syrians are smaller the weight gain is often more noticeable. observe her carefully for the next few days to be sure, but i would like to say that you have like bundles of joy on the way:) i do hope you are ready and prepared for taking care of them! if you need help feel free to ask, i've had much experience and success:)

If you had done the slightest bit of research beforehand, you would already know the answer to this question, and you would have known better than to breed them. There is such an overpopulation of baby hamsters going into pet stores from inexperienced and unregulated breeders that many of them go unsold for months before becoming snake food, if they even make it that far. Many are tossed in as feeders straightaway, if their heredity is unknown. It's bad enough that pet stores and careless breeders don't separate the males from females in a litter, and people buy a hamster that turns out pregnant through no fault of their own, you're doing it on purpose! I hope you have a LOT more cages, because a female hamster can have up to 25 babies in a single litter! And since they are solitary, territorial animals, they will fight to the death soon after being weaned, so you'll need separate places for each of them at around 3 weeks of age.
