Abused Guinea Pig's Care?

Abused Guinea Pig's Care?
Story short someone was selling guinea pigs, I've been wanting them for a long while set them up a nice big home, and have loads of siblings and family to play with them. I bought them off an ad.... Well when I got there they were in a five gallon aquarium....with green water, and they were obviously abused. I didn't want them to suffer any longer, so I bought them.

My first question is, they don't squeak unless communicating or scared what's with that?
Second; The female shivers and almost purs when she is pet a certain way?
Third; I can feel almost every bone in their body... how can i bring them to a healthy weight?
Fourth; The female seems to have had long fur at a point and has a bad chop of a hair cut how long will it take to grow out?

Any other advice would greatly help. =) They have a big home which is clean, healthy, and lots of toys for them to play with.
Good on ya for getting them out of there!

I'm not a piggie expert, but here is a site with a good lot of information, including a page about sounds.
I'm sure once things get settled down for them, they will vocalize much more.

Oh, that's terrible. It's really sad how some people just abuse animals...I've seen too many at the animal hospital where I work. I help care for abandoned and abused animals and sometimes we get guinea pigs.

Guinea pigs squeak for lots of reasons. Communication with other guinea pigs humans. Mine squeak when they hear me walk in my room, hear the fridge door open, hear a bag crinkle, or if they're hungry they might even squeal!

You know, my female shivers too. Sometimes she makes little chuttering noises while shivering when I pet her belly. That's normal, as long as she isn't shivering all the time.

Pellets! Pellets, the dry food, pack meat on those little piggie bones. Careful not to feed too much, and buy pellets that don't have added crap in them. Just plain pellets. My pigs used to hate plain pellets, but they've been eating Oxbow brand for a while and they LOVE them. They are always totally gone in the morning, and all four of my pigs are picky. And don't forget the fresh veggies and timothy hay.

Probably a few months for it to grow out.

Remember, never put guinea pigs in a wheel or exercise ball. These equal death because guinea pigs can't stretch their backs like that. Too delicate.

See a veterinarian. It would be a great idea to get these guys checked up. They may have something if they were abused.
